Welcome to the United Nations

Welcome to our tour of the United Nations main headquarters. We will be visiting four areas where world decisions are made. The U.N. headquarters is located in New York City, on 18 acres of property. New York City

General Assembly There are 192 countries in the General Assembly. Each country has one equal vote. Any issue is allowed to be debated in the General Assembly. Resolutions passed are not legally binding. Member nations do not have to follow the resolution.192 countries

Security Council Security Council has 15 members. Ten of the members are on 2 year terms. The other five members are permanent members to the council. The five permanent members are France, Russia, China, United Kingdom, and United States. Besides being permanent members they also have veto power. Other wise you need 9 out of the 15 members to vote yes in order to have a resolution pass.

Security Council Continued The Security Council deals with issues that might lead to conflict or war. Any resolution the Security Council passes must be followed by all member nations. Security Council may deploy a peacekeeping force.peacekeeping force

Secretariat Over 50,000 international workers, work around the world helping with the day to day running of the U.N. The head of the Secretariat is the Secretary General. The current Secretary General Ban Ki Moon Secretariat Building

Economic Social Council There are 54 members on the council serving 3 year terms. The council works with other organizations on economic and social issues.
