Thesis Statement A sentence that sums up what the entire essay is going to be about/focus on. (It goes in your intro.) It is your OPINION on your subject in a complete sentence. Ex. Tacos are my favorite food. OR Miley Cyrus is a terrible role model for today’s youth. OR Justin Bieber is annoying.

Thesis Statement For the proficiency test, it must clearly answer the given prompt (question). The format of your thesis will vary depending on the type of prompt/question you are answering. –For the proficiency exam, you are writing a short essay, which generally only requires a SIMPLE thesis.

Persuasive Writing

You are trying to make the reader think differently. Your position must be very clear. Use facts, examples, and reasons to support your opinion. Whatever position you take, stay with it. RPDP Secondary Literacy

PERSUASIVE ESSAYS Choose a side and convince the reader to agree. Example Prompt: Should Miley Cyrus grow her hair long again or leave it short? Choose a side and convince your reader to agree with you. The thesis needs to answer the question, giving your side of the issue in a complete sentence. There are a few ways to do this: –THE SIMPLE ANSWER: Miley Cyrus should grow her hair long again. OR Miley Cyrus should leave her hair short.

Persuasive example: Some people think tacos should be served in the cafeteria every day. Do you agree or disagree? Why? –SIMPLE ANSWER: Tacos should be served every day in the cafeteria. –WITH A GENERIC ROAD MAP: Tacos should be served in the cafeteria every day for several reasons. –WITH A SPECIFIC ROAD MAP (THIS ONE DEFINITELY REQUIRES SOME PREWRITING): Tacos should be served in the cafeteria every day because they are delicious and will lead to higher academic success.
