Aka “pure susbtances”

MATTER Has mass and takes up space. Made of atoms. All solids, liquids, and gases are matter.

MIXTURE A combination of 2 or more substances that can be separated by physical means –Chicken Soup –Rocky road Ice Cream –Soil

PURE SUBSTANCE cannot be separated by physical means (sorting, filtering, heating, cooling), All particles making it up are the same ALWAYS HOMOGENOUS! –Gold –Table Salt

HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE A mixture that has the same composition throughout. –UNOPENED can of soda –Alloys –Kool-Aid –Salt water

HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE A mixture in which the composition is not the same throughout. –Chicken Noodle Soup –Italian Salad Dressing

ELEMENT A substance made up of only one type of atom. Each has a unique symbol. –Silver (Ag) –Gold (Au) –Hydrogen (H) –Oxygen (O)

COMPOUND A pure substance that is made of 2 or more elements chemically combined. Can only be separated by chemical means (burning, chemical reactions). Smallest part called a molecule. Each has a unique formula. –Table Salt (NaCl) –Rock Salt (CaCl 2 ) –Water (H 2 O)
