Objective: What is genetic engineering and what are its applications?

 Genetic Engineering is making changes to an organisms DNA

 Selective breeding: is used to create the most desirable traits in certain species of plants and animals

 Reproduction as a result of the mating of two individuals who are genetically related.  Upside: Useful in maintaining certain characteristics.  Downside: Two individuals with a recessive allele can cause a genetic defect

 Scientist are able to extract, cut, separate, and sequence DNA.  Recombinant DNA: DNA that is synthetically combined from 2 different sources.

 Transgenic organisms: organisms with DNA from another species  Genetically Modified Foods: creating new strains of food with beneficial genes:  Cloning: create genetically identical organisms
