Introduction Howard Gardner (1943- ) is a Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education at Harvard University. He is an author of twenty books. In 2005, he was selected as one of the top 100 most influential public intellectuals in the world. During the past two decades, he and his colleagues at Project Zero, an educational research group at Harvard, have been working on the design for a performance based assessments in order to achieve a more interdisciplinary effort for education. During the past two decades, he and his colleagues at Project Zero, an educational research group at Harvard, have been working on the design for a performance based assessments in order to achieve a more interdisciplinary effort for education.

Frames of Mind Howard Gardner began his work with multiple intelligences with his 1983 release Frame of Mind. In the book, Gardner claimed that regular pen and paper IQ test do not fully capture the range of Human intelligence. Gardner defined intelligence as the ability to solve problems or fashion products that can be valued across many intelligence Dimensions. Multiple Intelligences (MI) initially consisted of seven dimensions of intelligence: 1. Visual/Spatial Intelligence 2. Musical Intelligence 3. Verbal/Linguistic Intelligence 4. Logical/Mathematical Intelligence 5. Interpersonal Intelligence 6. Intrapersonal Intelligence 7. Bodily/Kinesthetic

Seven Dimensions of Intelligence 1. Visual/Spatial – individuals with this intelligence are typically very good at visualizing things and are very adept at mentally manipulating objects. They display a strong visual memory and are very artistically inclined. They can also display a good sense of direction and have very good hand-eye coordination. 2. Musical – individuals with this intelligence are typically very rhythmic displaying a greater sensitivity to rhythm and sound than others. These individuals find themselves to be very musically inclined and can find themselves with a good singing voice or the ability to play a musical instrument. These individuals may also find learning things through music easier and may find themselves able to study better with music playing in the back ground. 3. Verbal/Linguistic – individuals with this intelligence find themselves adept with words and spoken languages. They are good at reading, writing and memorizing words and dates. They typically tend to learn best by reading, taking notes and listening to lectures. They are also skilled at explaining, teaching and persuasive speaking.

Seven Dimensions of Intelligence 4. Logical/Mathematical – individuals with this intelligence are typically very good with numbers, logic, inductive and deductive reasoning. While people will typically categorize people with this intelligence as being good with math or computer programming, it is better to define these individuals with good reasoning capabilities, scientific thinking and the ability to perform complex calculations. 5. Interpersonal - individuals with this intelligence typical have good socializing skills and are better at interacting with others. Individuals can find themselves to be assertive and go out to seek excitement. They can also find themselves to be very sensitive to other people’s moods and could be either a leader or a follower. They typically learn best by working with others and typically enjoy a good discussion or debate.

Seven Dimensions of Intelligence 6. Intrapersonal – individuals with this intelligence find themselves with good self reflective capabilities. They are reserved, self reliant and prefer to work alone. They are pretty self aware and are good at understanding their own emotions, their goals and motivations. They enjoy thought-based pursuits such as philosophy and they learn best when they can focus and concentrate on a subject all by themselves. A downfall for this intelligence however is that there is a certain degree of perfectionism associated with these individuals. 7. Bodily/Kinesthetic – individuals with this intelligence are pretty good with movement and doing physical things. These individuals find themselves to be very good with sports and dance and often prefer activities that involve a lot of movement. They may also find themselves good at acting or performing and are adept and building or making things. They learn best by physically doing things rather than reading about it like Verbal/Linguistic individuals do. They have good muscle memory and can typically remember things through their bodies.

Naturalist intelligence enables human beings to recognize, categorize and draw upon certain features of the environment. It 'combines a description of the core ability with a characterization of the role that many cultures value' (ibid.: 48). #8 ?
