1 Multiple Intelligences
Goals: To understand Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences Explore the implications of the theory of multiple intelligences for schools and society.

What does it mean to be intelligent in our society? What abilities do our schools value and promote? How do we measure a person’s intelligence?

3 What is Multiple Intelligence
Howard Gardner theory of Multiple Intelligence was developed to explain the possibility that people are capable of “many different and discrete facets of cognition” they display different types of intelligences which can be measured, fostered and evaluated as isolated parts of the mind. Gardner believed that intelligence is “the ability to solve problems, or to fashion products, that are valued in one or more cultural or community settings”.

5 "Musical-Rhythmic Intelligence"
Music Smart "Musical-Rhythmic Intelligence" Good at and enjoy: singing remembering songs rhyming dancing keeping the beat rapping playing instruments creating sound effects remembering things by: making them into a rhyme, song, or rap

6 "Logical-Mathematical Intelligence"
Logic Smart "Logical-Mathematical Intelligence" Good at and enjoy: calculating solving problems organizing hypothesizing categorizing analyzing making patterns researching using logical arguments

7 "Visual-Spatial Intelligence"
Picture Smart "Visual-Spatial Intelligence" Good at and enjoy: art photography designing graphing working with maps mazes making diagrams drawing plans creating mental pictures

8 "Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence"
Body Smart "Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence" Good at and enjoy: movement acting building fixing things manipulating making things learning actively

9 "Intrapersonal Intelligence"
Self Smart "Intrapersonal Intelligence" Good at and enjoy: setting goals self-control being responsible thinking about and understanding their: learning, feelings, behavior, strengths and weaknesses using their experiences to understand and explain things

10 "Interpersonal Intelligence"
People Smart "Interpersonal Intelligence" Good at and enjoy: understanding people working with others cooperating caring communicating leadership managing and organizing people

11 "Naturalist Intelligence"
Nature Smart "Naturalist Intelligence" Good at and enjoy: taking care of animals, being outdoors caring about the environment learning about, exploring, observing, and investigating nature, animals, and the environment

16 Discussion questions One criticism of Gardner’s theory is that he classifies talents as a type of intelligence. Critics might say that a talented dancer or chess player is not necessarily smart. How would you reply to this criticism? Does it matter if well special abilities “talents” or “intelligences”?
