Welcome! Please take out your agenda and write down the homework. Then begin the Do Now hand out. You have 5 minutes to complete as much as you can. 5 minutes End

Do Now Review 1. What do you know about the term “learning styles”? What do you think it means? 2. The poor boy. was to tired too run. 3. Brothers and sisters I have none, but this man’s father is my father’s son. Who is the man? 4. Variable: a. A set of numbers b. A symbol for an unknown number c. A changing word d. None of the above

Agenda Do Now Do Now Review Explain Wednesday’s Curriculum & “Norms” Powerpoint, video, discussion Closing

Learning Target I will be able to explain the concept of “multiple intelligences” to a friend, naming the different types of intelligences that exist. Using higher-level thinking, I can also infer what makes understanding multiple intelligences important for school and life, drawing my own conclusions with justified thought.

Multiple Intelligences What’s YOUR type of intelligence?

Some questions to consider  In which class do you feel most successful? What type of activities do you do in that class?  What type of activity do you know you’re good at?  What type of skills do you need to have in order to be good at that activity? Think of at least THREE.  Do you think you can apply those skills to the classroom? If yes, how? If no, why not?

Multiple Intelligences  Different areas 1.Visual/Spatial 2.Verbal/Linguistic 3.Logical/Mathematical 4.Bodily/Kinesthetic 5.Musical/rhythmic 6.Intrapersonal 7.Interpersonal 8.Naturalist

Born to learn… Sometimes learning in school isn’t framed in a way that helps us grow, and sometimes it is. It’s different for all of us. But no matter what, be assured, we are ALL clearly born to learn. As you watch the video, ask yourself, “How does this connect to TYPES OF LEARNING?” https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=falHoOEUFz0 https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=falHoOEUFz0

We’re all born to learn. What are your skills? What do you love to do? What is your type of INTELLIGENCE? Remember yesterday’s discussion in the ELA station. Is intelligence FIXED, or is it GROWN? Keep this in mind as we discuss this idea of multiple intelligences. 1.Do you think we can develop a type of intelligence, or that we are born with one, or both? 2.Do you think you can have more than one type of intelligence?

Visual/Spatial Learners  Ability to see the visual. These people think in pictures and creating pictures in their head to help them remember information. Sometimes they enjoy looking at maps, charts, pictures, videos, and movies.

Their Skills Include  puzzle building  reading,  writing,  understanding charts and graphs  sketching,  painting,  creating visual metaphors and analogies (perhaps through the visual arts),  manipulating images

Verbal/Linguistic Learning  They use words and language. These learners have good hearing skills and normally are good at talking/speaking. They think in words rather than pictures.

Their Skills Include  listening, speaking, writing, story telling, explaining, teaching, using humor, understanding the meaning of words, remember information, and can convince someone to see their point of view.

Logical/Mathematical Learning  Have the ability to use reason, logic (common sense) and numbers. These people think in patterns making connections between pieces of information. They are curious about the world around them, ask lots of questions, and like to do experiments.

Their Skills Include  problem solving, classifying and categorizing information, working to figure out the relationship of objects to each other, doing controlled experiments, questioning and wondering about natural events, performing complex mathematical calculations, working with geometric shapes

Bodily/Kinesthetic Learning  ability to control body movements and handle objects well. Try to do things that involve movement. They have a good sense of balance and eye-hand co- ordination. (e.g. ball play, balancing beams). Through interacting with the space around them, they are able to remember and process information (hands-on).

Their Skills Include  dancing, sports, hands on experimentation, using body language, crafts, acting, miming, using their hands to create or build, expressing emotions through the body

Musical Learners  Can make and appreciate music. These learners think in sounds, rhythms and patterns. They immediately respond to music either appreciating or criticizing what they hear. Many of these learners are extremely sensitive to environmental sounds (e.g. crickets, bells, dripping taps).

Their Skills Include  singing, whistling, playing musical instruments, recognizing tonal patterns, composing music, remembering melodies, understanding the structure and rhythm of music

Interpersonal Learning  Can relate and understand others. These people try to see things from other people's point of view in order to understand how they think and feel. They often have a strange ability to sense feelings, intentions and motivations. They are great organizers. They try to keep peace in-group settings and want cooperation. The use of verbal (speaking) and non- verbal language (eye contact, body language) is used often

Their Skills Include  seeing things from other perspectives, listening, feeling bad for others in bad situations, understanding other people's moods and feelings, counseling, cooperating with groups, noticing people's moods, communicating both verbally and non- verbally, building trust, conflict resolution, create good relationships with others.

Intrapersonal Learners  These people reflect on their actions and know themselves very well. These learners try to understand their own feelings, dreams, relationships with others, and strengths and weaknesses.

Their Skills Include  Recognizing their own strengths and weaknesses, reflecting on and studying themselves, have awareness of their feelings, desires and dreams, evaluate their thinking patterns, understanding their role in relationship to others

Back to the questions 1.Do you think we can develop a type of intelligence, or that we are born with one, or both? 1.Do you think you can have more than one type of intelligence?
