Building residents’ capacity to create lasting change

Big Local 15 year, £220m resident-led programme 150 areas across England Outcomes: Communities will be better able to identify local needs and take action in response to them. People will have increased skills and confidence, so that they continue to identify and respond to needs in the future. The community will make a difference to the needs it prioritises. People will feel that their area is an even better place to live. We encourage residents to have greater control over the things that matter most to them; supported by those they trust.

Popular themes

Social capital learning We encourage community building, social cohesion and bridging networks around tangible goals. Funding acts as a catalyst and residents are in charge of decision making, with light touch, yet consistent support. Long term, community-paced approach to building social capital. Increasingly led by residents who are gaining confidence, creating new networks. Shared leadership helps delivery. 68% of those most involved feel more positive about where they live and 78% feel they are building a stronger sense of community. Getting people involved is the biggest challenge; many are reliant on small numbers which might not sufficiently reflect their community.

Our Sale West will further develop an even more engaged community, where all residents have the opportunity to achieve their full potential in a safe, attractive and caring environment. To achieve this we aim to: offer opportunities for all residents to reach their potential in developing skills, gaining jobs and apprenticeships improve community facilities, fit for the future, so they meet the needs of all residents through a wide range of activities create a better environment, with cleaner, safer and popular parks and open spaces support and help residents to improve their health, wellbeing, family life and community spirit.
