Celebrating Student Work – Math Session E.4 Using Kids’ Zone to Organize Data. Math Session 4 of 8

Focusing Questions  How can we use Kids’ Zone to organize data digitally?  Which is the best graph to choose to display a particular data set?

Instruction

Framing The Session In our last session, we used Google Docs Spreadsheets to display and share survey data interactively. Now we are going to use Kids’ Zone to organize our data into different graphical representations. We will choose one set of data from the surveys and then choose the best graphical representation to organize the data set digitally.

Which graphs are best to track changes over time? Which graphical representation is best to compare parts of a whole? Which graphs are best to display the relationship between two different things? When we want to choose the appropriate graph to organize a data set, these are some questions we might ask ourselves.

Teaching Go to Kidzone.Kidzone. Choose a set of data from Session 2 (Favorite Colors).

Teaching Click on “bar graph” since you are comparing favorite colors among a group of people. Select the direction, shape and style you want for your graph.

Teaching Click on Data and give the graph a title. Label the x and y axis. Choose the number of items in the data set.

Teaching Give each item a label. Enter the minimum and maximum values.

Teaching Click on Labels. Choose the font color, style and size along with background and label color.

Teaching Click on preview to see what you created.

Teaching Click on Print/Save for options.

Possible Graphical Representation using Kidzone

Within Kidzone, you can also make horizontal bar graphs. Here is a different data set from Session 2 to show you.

Possible Graphical Representation using Kidzone

Guided Practice Now let's choose another set of data from Session 2 (Boroughs that We Work In). We will go through the steps within Kids’ Zone to enter the data and customize our graphs. Then we can preview what we did to see if we chose the best graph to display the data.

Work Time

Getting Started Take the next 25 minutes to choose one set of data from your surveys. Then choose the appropriate type of graph that you feel is best to organize that particular data set. We will then come back together and share."

Work Time Go to Kids’ Zone’s Create a Graph website. Choose a set of data from your surveys. Choose the graphical representation that will work best with that data set. Organize the data by entering the information into the template. Customize your graphs and preview what you created.

Share

Today we learned how to use Kids’ Zone to organize a data set digitally. Now we will look at what you created and see which graphs worked best for a particular set of data and why. Participants will share what they have created and tell which graphs worked best for a particular set of data. Share

How does the work we did using Kids’ Zone address the focusing question? How can we use Kids’ Zone in the classroom to organize data digitally? Share
