Presentation transcript:

Composing with source materials: Inserting quotes – Often a writing prompt will ask you to write about something you already know, but the prompt will also provide you with some quote you CAN work into your essay. For example, let’s say your prompt goes like this: –The dictionary defines love as ‘an attraction, desire, or affection felt for a person who arouses delight or admiration, or elicits tenderness or benevolence.’ How do you define love?

The prompt may then go on to provide a few quotes like the following that you can work into your essay: “When my grandma got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandpa does it for her now all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love.” Rebecca- age 8 “When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouths.” Billy- age 4 “Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving Cologne and they go out and smell each other.” Kari- age 5 “Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French Fries without making them give you any of theirs.” Chrissy- age 6 How should you proceed?

Your assignment: Write sentences explaining how you define love. Also, respond to one of the articles on the “love handout,” including a quote from the article. A QUOTE IS A LINE FROM THE ARTICLE REPEATED WORD FOR WORD… NOT NECESSARILY SOMETHING IN QUOTATIONS.

Weekend Writing Assignment: Scoring on: –Use of pronoun(s) –Correct capitalization –Use of compound sentences Use of conjunctions (underlined) –Limited simple sentences –Use of TWO vocabulary words

Writing Process 1.Prewriting Gather/Generate information (keeping complete records of sources from the very beginning) Develop a thesis Determine organization Outline 2.Draft your paper (Develop initial organization, transitions, choosing best evidence) 3.Revise (better organization/evidence/unity/ completeness, point of view, passive/active voice,) 4.Edit (grammar, punctuation, spelling) 5.Publish (MLA formatting, etc)

UNITY Discover a clearly stated point or topic sentence, and make sure all the other information in the paragraph or essay is in support of that point. SUPPORT Support points with specific evidence, and plenty of it. COHERENCE Revise, organize, and connect supporting evidence so that paragraphs and essays transition smoothly from one bit of supporting information to the next. SENTENCE SKILLS Edit so that sentences are error-free for clearer and more effective communication.
