Presentation transcript:

SANREM CRSP Bridging Grant (SE Asia) Ian Coxhead, University of Wisconsin Gerald Shively, Purdue University Three main activities: 1 Continuation of empirical research focused on economic and environmental features of smallholder agriculture in Vietnam, and refinement of tools for SA and NRM policy analysis; 2Consolidation of research lessons from the Philippines into a new book; 3Transfer of relevant metadata from SANREM SE Asia, particularly data from the Philippines.

Progress/results, Activity 1 Underlying problem: low performance and environmental stress in smallholder production systems 1.Ha (Nong Lam Univ) and Shively (Purdue) have been investigating smallholder coffee production in Vietnam. (Three published papers to date; 1 MS thesis completed, 1 ongoing, 1 paper used in undergraduate and extension training program in Vietnam). 2. Extension of (1) to cross-country comparisons using data from smallholder coffee farmers in Latin America. (MS thesis expected in summer 2006). 3. Collaboration with Mars, Inc. to assess smallholder cocoa production in Indonesia. (MS thesis expected summer 2007).

Progress/results, Activity 1 (continued) 4.Ongoing research at forest margin in Palawan aimed at quantifying changes in forest clearing as a result of agricultural intensification. 5.Coxhead (University of Wisconsin) and Bui (Hue University) coordinated collection of commune- level and district level data on land use and aquaculture activity in Central Vietnam and began econometric analysis. 6.Coxhead also hosted two VN Fulbright scholars working on trade-environment issues, in residence for the academic year

Progress/results, Activity 2 Book summarizing SANREM II research from SE Asia published by CABI in December I. Coxhead and G. Shively (eds.) Land Use Change in Tropical Watersheds: Evidence, Causes and Remedies. Distribution of 100 free copies is on-going. Copies distributed in the Philippines and to libraries & host-country research institutions world-wide. Coxhead and Rola (U. of the Philippines-Los Baños) made further progress on a second volume of SANREM Phase II research from Manupali.

Progress/results, Activity 3 Transfer of Metadata ongoing.

Funding synergies Coxhead and partners in Vietnam submitted proposals for continued empirical work, modeling, and capacity-building. $400K Ford Foundation project approved and started in Spring As a follow-up to an NSF-funding project, Shively and partners are developing new work linking economic, environmental, and health risks among vulnerable populations in forest margin areas.

Institutional synergies USAID synergies: ALO project in Vietnam Success Alliance partners in VN and INDO Private sector synergies: Mars, Inc. Cocoa in Sulawesi.
