# 8 Computers have REALLY changed over time! timeline.php?timeline_category=cmptrhttp:// timeline.php?timeline_category=cmptr

# 9 Hardware –“The parts of a computer system that can be kicked.” —Henri Karrenbeld

# 10 Hardware Inputs CPU on a chip – the Microprocessor (s) RAM Chip ROM built in, BIOS MP3 file from the Internet Outputs

# 11 We will cover secondary storage at the end of the course Secondary storage includes hard drives, CD- ROMs, DVDs, and Flash Memory cards like you find in cell phones, digital cameras, etc. Most secondary storage will maintain its data without any external source of power. See Unit B in your Computer Concepts book, Computer Hardware

# 12 What can do wrong with hardware? Memory, disks, CD-ROM drives, floppy drives, video cards, mother boards, CPUs, fans, power supplies, monitors, disk controllers can all FAIL! Rarely, chips can make calculation errors.

# 13 computer hardware Windows XP Applications Software in a Computer _____________: Instructions or Computer Programs _____________: Electronic Devices & Circuits Software means never having to say you’re finished.” —J. D. Hildebrand

# 14 Hardware needs a manager to tell it –what to do –when to do it –how to do it The __________________ (OS) controls all –input –output –processing It manages the data and the memory and appearance What is an Operating System?

# 15 Operating Systems Software Windows XP UNIX (LINUX) Mac OS X Handhelds -- Palm OS UIUC uses UNIX for servers iPods

# 16 Power of an Operating System An operating system produced by one company can intentionally make it difficult to use software programs produced by another company For those people wary of Microsoft, Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. More information here:

# 17 Commercial Off The Shelf = COTS When you or your business do not create your own software but use commercial products, that software is called COTS Microsoft Office is “off the shelf” and not “home grown” In business, the source of your software can be a critical issue, in terms of reliability and security. Often today you cannot see the code that constructed the software.

# 18 Human-Computer Interface (HCI) Includes the mouse, instructions via the microphone, commands for the disables, retina scans, as well as the GUI

# 19 GUI – each OS has its own (part of HCI) Dialog Box: Menu Bar

# 20 …and just a word on Cheating Question: Is it fun to have my instructor discover that my work is the same as someone else's? No. Question: Is it cheating to show my MP or honors project to someone else? Yes. Actively showing/sharing all or parts of your code or answers on MPs is cheating. On exams, passively allowing someone to copy your work is cheating.

# 21 More on cheating Question: Do I get a 0 (zero) if another group turns in my work and says they did it? Yes. We are not blessed with "lie detectors." In order to keep other people out of your laptop or computer, keep it password protected. If you don't take this step, we cannot help you.
