Progress on Hydrogen R&D System Yury Ivanyushenkov on behalf of Elwyn Baynham, Tom Bradshaw, Mike Courthold, Matthew Hills, Tony Jones MICE Collaboration Meeting, RAL, 9 October 2007

Scope Hydrogen system manufacture progress Safety issue: cryostat jacketing Next steps MICE Collaboration Meeting, RAL, 9 October 2007

Hydrogen System Manufacture Progress Contract for hydrogen system manufacture was given to AS Scientific Ltd, Abingdon. Bi-weekly regular meetings with AS. Manufacture status: First batch of detailed drawings produced ( see next slides) Certification of cryostat vessel is on the way Supplies of valves and safety valves are suggested Some materials has been ordered MICE Collaboration Meeting, RAL, 9 October 2007

Safety issue: Cryostat jacketing Safety issues In the Specification document the cryostat is shown to be covered with a nitrogen jacket. Tertiary container structure for the test cryostat is difficult to built. Analysis of requirement for cryostat jacketing is done in the document presented to the MICE TB. Conclusions and suggestion: In the steady state scenarios probability of generating an explosive mixture is low Only in the scenario of a catastrophic vent of the outer vessel an explosive mixture can be formed. This can be mitigated by bagging ( using a flexible cover) the cryostat with inert gas -> Simple solution can be found . MICE Collaboration Meeting, RAL, 9 October 2007

Next steps Next 3 months: Sign off manufacture drawings Prepare for the system test at RAL (Cryogenics group lab) Monitor work on control system by Daresbury group Prepare ventilation system spec Make plans for installation of the system in the MICE Hall MICE Collaboration Meeting, RAL, 9 October 2007

Personal This is probably my last presentation in front of the Collaboration as I will be leaving RAL (and MICE) in about a month time. Thank you all for a possibility to work with you during these last years. I wish the Collaboration a successful start of the experiment soon. Looking forward to continue working with members of MICE on other projects (ILC positron source, superconducting undulators for light sources and FELs etc.) MICE Collaboration Meeting, RAL, 9 October 2007
