1 Our goals for today’s meeting  Confirm FNAL role –a complete review of all cryogenics and gas handling –  We would like an above ground review only in order to start work  Review the documentation LUX has assembled based on the Theilacker memo– identify any missing pieces  Confirm committee members know how to access review documentation on LUX web site  Establish a timeline for completion of the review – we have a tentative date for a readiness review  Once the review is complete, it should constitute a signoff element for the overall LUX readiness review Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

3 Starting point for the cryogenics review Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Review elements from Theilacker memo 1. piping & instrumentation diagram (P&ID) LN system P&IDs xenon system P&IDs 2. valve and instrumentation list 3. list of plausible failure modes 4. Calculate maximum flow rates for each item in the failure mode list 5. ODH analysis per FESHM 5064 based on items 3 and 4. 6. engineering notes for any pressure vessels per FESHM 5031. 7. engineering notes for pressure piping systems per FESHM 5031.1. 8. a Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA). 9. a What-If Analysis. 10. any required written cryogenic LOTO procedures. 11. any required written startup procedures (verification checklists, etc.). 12. any required written operational or maintenance procedures.

5 1. P&ID Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory LN system P&IDsLN system schematic contained in LN ODH document. P&ID will be generated shortly xenon system P&IDsFull xenon system schematic Detector subsystem Circulation subsystem storage subsystem

6 2 Valve and Instrumentation List Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory http://teacher.pas.rochester.edu:8080/wiki/bin/view/Lux/PartsLists All valves and instrumentation are numbered according to a standard numbering scheme and tabulated at the link below

7 3. Plausible failure modes Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Failure modes are in the ODH documents and in the FMEA

8 4. Calculate maximum flow rates for each item in the failure mode list Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Maximum flow rates are in the ODH documents and in the FMEA

9 5. Prepare an ODH analysis per FESHM 5064 based on items 3 and 4. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory ODH analyses have been made available to this committee for xenon and nitrogen – updates as necessary on LUX web Near term the underground OH analysis by Alonso is not needed

10 6.,7. Prepare engineering notes for any pressure vessels and piping systems per FESHM 5031. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Vessel: cryostat vessel requirements, drawings and manufacturer certifications are on the the LUX Web Piping: Most LUX piping falls below the FESHM standard for safety notes – for the parts that do need an engineering note we have assembled partial documentation

11 8. Prepare a Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA). 9. Prepare a What-If Analysis. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Draft FMEA including What If analysis on TWiki http://teacher.pas.rochester.edu:8080/wiki/pub/L uxSafety/CryogenicSystems/LUXFMEACryogeni cs_r3.pdf Guidance: What is a What If Analysis

12 10. Prepare any required written cryogenic LOTO procedures. 11. Prepare any required written startup procedures (verification checklists, etc.). 12. Prepare any required written operational or maintenance procedures. draft gas handling startup, operations and maintenance procedure Mature draft, needs updating draft cryogen handling startup operations and maintenance procedure early draft, needs updating LOTO procedure - not yet determined to be necessary Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

13 Is anything missing ?  Interim review of test using a ‘small amount’ of nitrogen to cool the detector - no xenon in this test  Recap Theilacker memo for interim review – including:  Mike D.: Describe actual configuration - one dewar connected to thermosyphon system.  Mike D.: Create P&ID for this and for full system  Adam Bradley: Add mechanical drawings for thermosyphon system –  Mike D.: create procedures for LN supply of the thermosyphon dewar  Adam Bradley: Engineering note for thermosyphon dewar with associated relief valves  Adam Bradley: procedure for running thermosyphons  List maximum pressures for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
