Read these themes from The Necklace & The Gift of the Magi: WealthPrideSacrifice Love Choose a theme you feel best demonstrates the two stories. Free write Free write comparing and contrasting how these themes are demonstrated in each story. You WILL be writing a formal analysis, so use this as brainstorming!

Turn to your partner and discuss your ideas Each person should give prompting feedback in the form of… I really like your thoughts about… What about… Can you think of… I appreciate your view, but here’s something else to consider… This conversation will only serve to HELP you on your paragraph… talk it out!

When you use a quote from the story in a writing response, you want to make sure you include a lead-in, the quote, and your analysis. The lead-in (or top bun) introduces the context around the quote. The quote is used with a citation at the end telling the reader where to find it. Your analysis follows, which explains the quote and helps prove your point.

When Davy shoots the goose, Reuben describes his brother’s expression as, “on his face is nothing at all but the knowledge that the goose is his” (Enger 16). This scene, and Reuben’s description of it, foreshadows the scene where, with equal calmness and confidence, Davy shoots and kills Tommy Basca and Israel Finch.

Where in the story the quote is from Which character said or thought it What is happening at that moment When Davy shoots the goose, Reuben describes his brother’s expression as, “on his face is nothing at all but the knowledge that the goose is his” (Enger 16). This scene, and Reuben’s description of it, foreshadows the scene where, with equal calmness and confidence, Davy shoots and kills Tommy Basca and Israel Finch.

Should not be too long Should not merely state a fact Must be punctuated correctly Must be followed by the correct citation Example: When Davy shoots the goose, Reuben describes his brother’s expression as, “on his face is nothing at all but the knowledge that the goose is his” (Enger 16). This scene, and Reuben’s description of it, foreshadows the scene where, with equal calmness and confidence, Davy shoots and kills Tommy Basca and Israel Finch.

Your interpretation Explain how it proves your point Describe what the quote reveals Example: When Davy shoots the goose, Reuben describes his brother’s expression as, “on his face is nothing at all but the knowledge that the goose is his” (Enger 16). This scene, and Reuben’s description of it, foreshadows the scene where, with equal calmness and confidence, Davy shoots and kills Tommy Basca and Israel Finch.

In Guy de Maupassant’s The Necklace, Mathilde selfishly wanted something that would improve herself personally, without considering her husband’s happiness. When Mathilde asked for money to purchase a dress, she was also “wondering for how large a sum she could ask without bringing upon herself an immediate refusal and an exclamation of horror from the careful-minded clerk” (Maupassant __). This demonstrates her scheme to get the most amount of money, without concern for how it may personally damage her husband’s wishes.
