2. What is the quote sandwich?
A way to seamlessly include a quote into a paragraph to serve as proof for your argument.
Primarily in the body paragraphs, but really used anytime you quote something.
In SPES, it is found in the proof section.
Using the quote sandwich will help elevate your writing style.

3. Structure of a Quote Sandwich

4. Introduction (top bun)
Tells readers that they are about to read a quote.
Gives context to the quote.
Sometimes tells who is about to say the quote, or what the quote is going to about.

5. Introductory(top bun)
Begins with a “signal phrase” like
According to…
In __________, it can be seen that…
In this quote, ________
Sometimes requires a reporting verb.
Also contextualizes the quote, explaining
Where in the story the quote is from
Which character said or thought it
What is happening at that moment

Signal Phrase
In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Clarisse McClellan is an outcast in a dystopian world. She does not fit in because her ideas are so fundamentally different to those of her society. Clarisse states, “I’m antisocial, they say. I don’t mix... Social to me means talking to you about things like this... But I don’t think it’s social to get a bunch of people together and then not let them talk, do you? “ (29) Clarisse’s definition belongs to a society of the past, therefore her views do not make sense. However, she understands the real meaning of being social; it is this society that does not.

10. Explanation (bottom bun)
This should be an analysis of the quote.
Why is this quote important?
How does this quote prove your statement or make your point?
How does the quote relate back to your thesis?
What does this quote reveal?
The explanation should be developed, and longer than one sentence.
This is the E in your SPES paragraph—it should not only explain the quote, but also link the explanation back to your statement.

Introduces the quote.
Gives the quote context.
States the quote.
Explains why the quote is relevant .
Explains how the quote relates back to the thesis.

13. Think-Pair-Share
With a self-chosen buddy, use the following quote to create a delicious quote sandwich. Please write out your quote sandwich on a piece of notebook paper. We will then share for prizes.
Prompt: How did Shlomo’s death (Elie’s father) impact Elie?
“I shall not describe my life during that period. It no longer mattered. Since my father’s death, nothing mattered to me anymore” (Wiesel 113).

14. Quote Sandwich: Rough Draft Style
Using their quote sandwich notes, students will revise their problem/solution rough draft .
Read over your rough draft, underlining or highlighting all of your quotes.
Look for all parts of the quote sandwich:
-Do you introduce the quote using a signal phrase and reporting verb?
-Is it clear to the reader where this quote is coming from?
-Is the quote correctly punctuated?
-Do the sentences after the quotation explain the meaning and the purpose of the quote?
On a separate piece of paper, begin rewriting your body paragraphs using the quote sandwich.
After we have all completed revising our body paragraphs, we will share for prizes.

15. If you have completed your rough draft revision, it is time to move on to editing:
Begin with the last sentence of your essay.
Read each sentence, looking for:
Capitalization—proper nouns, beginnings of sentences.
Usage—is this the right word?
Punctuation—comma rules
