Standard: 2.6 Distinguish between fact and opinion in expository text When you are reading, it is important to be able to distinguish between facts and opinions. Written materials such as articles, web site information, biographies, and newspapers often contain both facts and opinions. Being able to tell them apart will help you judge the validity of a writer’s ideas. It will also help you choose appropriate sources when doing research. Objective: Today we will learn to identify fact and opinion in an expository text.

Identifying Fact versus Opinion A fact can be proven. Dates Locations Opinions express someone’s feelings and cannot be proved. Clue words: more, most, some, usually, words that describe feelings (excited, happy, sad)

I know and I think. Facts can be proved, but opinions cannot. A fact is a statement that can be proven. Fact - Ask yourself how you could find out whether or not it is true. Opinion – Ask yourself if you see any clue words. Example: My car has been driven for 15,600 miles. Michael Jordon was born on February 17, 1963. The Empire State Building is 1,250 feet tall. An opinion is someone’s view, or belief, or way of thinking about something. Beethoven is the greatest composer that ever lived. Goodnight Moon is the best children's book ever written.
