2 What is a fact? A fact is a statement that is true and can be proven.

3 What is an opinion? An opinion is someone’s view, or belief, or way of thinking about something.

4 When you are reading, it is important to be able to distinguish between facts and opinions. Written materials such as articles, web site information, biographies, and newspapers often contain both facts and opinions. Being able to tell them apart will help you judge the validity of a writer’s ideas. It will also help you choose appropriate sources when doing research.

5 Valid: logically correct; justifiable; well-rounded in fact.

6 Determining between fact and opinion: For each of the following statements, indicate whether the statement is an opinion (O) or fact (F).

7 1.Washington, D.C. is the Capital City of the United States.

8 2. Walt Disney World is a family-friendly theme park.

9 3. Whales are superior to dolphins.

10 4. Whales are mammals.

11 5. John Adams was the second president of the United States.
