Romeo has clear eyes for Rosaline but she looks past him and is not interested in any of his advances. Rosaline does not seek a relationship and this ties in with the strong presence of religion in her quest to remain “pure”. Romeo, talking about Rosaline. “in that sparing makes huge waste,” Lust. He is frustrated that Rosaline wants to remain pure and therefore won’t sleep with him. He isn’t concerned about what losing her virginity would do to her. Sleeping with him could ruin her as at that time, a woman must remain a virgin until marriage. A man did not have to live by these rules however.

During this era divorce was not generally an option and people would only marry once. Therefore for a happy life people would want to choose wisely in the person they married. However often had limited choice during this era.

Can you link this to the time in which the play was written?   Romeo to Friar Lawrence “with Rosaline, my ghostly father? no; I have forgot that name, and that name’s woe.” Romeo tells Friar Lawrence that Rosaline means nothing to him which reinforces the idea that his attraction to her was physical (lust). It was usual for men to be lustful towards women. Men could marry without being a virgin but it was frowned upon by women.

He says that men’s love is based on what they see not what they feel. (saying Romeo’s love for Rosaline was lustful). It was usual for men to be lustful towards women. Men could marry without being a virgin but it was frowned upon by women.
