Exploring Evidence Romeo talking to Benvolio about Rosaline Who do you think is speaking? Who is he/she speaking to/about? Quotation What does this show about their relationship? Can you link this to the time in which the play was written? Romeo talking to Benvolio about Rosaline   “Out of her favour, where I am in Love” One sided relationship. Romeo has clear eyes for Rosaline but she looks past him and is not interested in any of his advances. Rosaline does not seek a relationship and this ties in with the strong presence of religion in her quest to remain “pure”. If females did not choose marriage they many would devote their life to religion by becoming a nun. Explanation 1 EVIDENCE POINT Explanation 2

Exploring Evidence Who do you think is speaking? Who is he/she speaking to/about? Quotation What does this show about their relationship? Can you link this to the time in which the play was written? Romeo, talking about Rosaline. “in that sparing makes huge waste,” Lust. He is frustrated that Rosaline wants to remain pure and therefore won’t sleep with him. He isn’t concerned about what losing her virginity would do to her. Sleeping with him could ruin her as at that time, a woman must remain a virgin until marriage. A man did not have to live by these rules however.

Exploring Evidence Who do you think is speaking? Who is he/she speaking to/about? Quotation What does this show about their relationship? Can you link this to the time in which the play was written?   Romeo, talking about Rosaline. “When the devout religion in my mind” Romeo is head over heels for Rosaline and he has no doubt their “love” would be perfect in his mind. During this era divorce was not generally an option and people would only marry once. Therefore for a happy life people would want to choose wisely in the person they married. However often had limited choice during this era.

Exploring Evidence Who do you think is speaking? Who is he/she speaking to/about? Quotation What does this show about their relationship? Can you link this to the time in which the play was written?   Romeo to Friar Lawrence “with Rosaline, my ghostly father? no; I have forgot that name, and that name’s woe.” Romeo tells Friar Lawrence that Rosaline means nothing to him which reinforces the idea that his attraction to her was physical (lust). It was usual for men to be lustful towards women. Men could marry without being a virgin but it was frowned upon by women.

Exploring Evidence Who do you think is speaking? Who is he/she speaking to/about? Quotation What does this show about their relationship? Can you link this to the time in which the play was written?   Friar Lawrence to Romeo “Young men’s love then lives not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.” Friar Lawrence is cross with Romeo because he has moved on from Rosaline so quickly. He says that men’s love is based on what they see not what they feel. (saying Romeo’s love for Rosaline was lustful). It was usual for men to be lustful towards women. Men could marry without being a virgin but it was frowned upon by women.

Exploring Evidence Who do you think is speaking? Quotation What does this show about their relationship? Can you link this to the time in which the play was written?   Romeo talking to Benvolio about Rosaline “She will not stay the siege of loving terms” Rosaline will not succumb to advances made by Romeo or any other men. During this era marriages were generally approved by the father of the bride. It was them who would decide who was good enough to marry the daughter when a hand was extended.
