5 Historical Context Life spans were shorter so girls usually married in their early teens Marriage of wealthy or noble parents were arranged, often before they were even old enough to marry (arranged marriages) Marrying a daughter into another influential family created powerful alliances & brought political & material advantages The family of the girl provided a dowry – a gift of money or property – which became the groom’s possession

6 Summary Act 1.2 Capulet is eager for Paris to marry his daughter Juliet, and plans a party to be held later that night. He sends ones of his servants with a guest list to invite people at the party. The servant is illiterate (doesn’t know how to read) and accidentally meets Romeo and his friends and asks them for help. Romeo and his friends decide to turn up uninvited to the Capulet’s party. Romeo hoping to see Rosaline, whom he is still in love with.

7 Summary Act 1.3 Lady Capulet discusses the idea of marriage to Paris with Juliet. Juliet keeps her options open as she says she is too young to consider marriage. Juliet says that if her parents think Paris is a good match she will consent. The Nurse wishes Juliet every possible happiness... Vocabulary Sirrah = used by a speaker to address a younger or of lower status person than the speaker
