Design is integrated throughout the curriculum Design is the essence of engineering Design is the essence of engineering Design transforms knowledge into reality producing new medical tools, devices, and technologies Design transforms knowledge into reality producing new medical tools, devices, and technologies Biomedical engineers of the future will need a strong command of design Biomedical engineers of the future will need a strong command of design Design experiences prepare students for unforeseen challenges Design experiences prepare students for unforeseen challenges Student design project pages: Student design project pages:

Device to Ease MRI Breast Biopsy Procedures In current MRI biopsy procedures, radiologists must make several manual adjustments until the biopsy needle is in the vicinity of the suspicious tissue Because operators adjust the positioner from the MRI control room via computer-generated coordinates, the device not only may improve biopsy accuracy, but also may reduce the biopsy time from an hour to about 20 minutes. Mike Hallam, John Puccinelli, Brian Asti, Jeremy O'Brien, Scott Wiese

Lisa Ruehlow (left) and Nicole Werner Portable Voice Calibrator The goal of this project is to design an affordable microprocessor-based feedback device that would minimize the need for voice therapy sessions for patients with loss of speech intelligibility. It must alert the user when his or her voice intensity falls below a specified threshold. This device should be easy to use, light-weight, portable and unobtrusive.

Elizabeth Nee, Angela Heppner, Briar Duffy and Jeffrey Phillips Self-Disarming Suture Needle The suture needle is designed to prevent disease transmission caused by accidental sticks. The design includes a fluid-filled balloon that when depressed, causes the suture needle to protrude from a protective sheath. Releasing the balloon mechanism retracts the suture needle.

ECG Signal Quality Monitoring John Webster (Advisor), Scott Wiese, Mike Piche, John Puccinelli, Paul Anheier, Kevin Schumacher (GE Medical) Develop a device that detects and measures interference in electrocardiograms
