 The Dutch found New Netherland (New York)  Henry Hudson in 1609 sailed the Hudson River  1621 New Netherland is colonized.  New Amsterdam (Now New York City) became the capital in  Economy: Fur trade

 Dutch had a more friendly relationship with Natives than Virginia and New England.  Less interested in conquering the Native Americans and more interested in trading with Iroquois Natives for furs.  There was still some disputes between them.  England eventually takes over New Netherland.

 A protestant whose religious views were radical for the time.  Quaker society.  Principles of equality, cooperation, and religious toleration.  Settled in Pennsylvania

 “Quakers believed that God’s inner light burned inside everyone.  -The meetings reflected a respect for conscience and freedom of speech - MUCH different than Puritan New England.  Held service without formal ministers, dressed plainly, refused to serve in military.

 Penn saw his colony as a “ Holy experiment”  Guaranteed every adult male settler 50 acres of land and the right to vote.  Named Philadelphia or “the city of brotherly love” the capital.  Treated Natives fairly.  Natives respected Penn  Didn’t have a single conflict for the first 50 years.

 “Now I would have you well observe, that I am very sensible of the unkindness and injustice that has been too much exercised towards you by the people of these parts of the world, who have sought… to make great advantages by you, sometimes to the shedding of blood.. But I am not such a man… I have great love and regard toward you, and I desire to win and gain your love and friendship by A kind and just and peaceable life.”
