Reflexive (Present tense) Grammar Essential

Reflexive Verbs/Infinitives There are two categories for all infinitives. There are reflexive and non-reflexive. Reflexive verbs have the subject doing action to self. Non-reflexive have the subject doing action to someone/ something else. Reflexives, in their infinitive form, have se at the end. The are very easy to spot in a list.

Reflexive Verbs You may have noticed that some of the infinitives have been used before, but now have a se attached to them. lavarse = to wash self lavar = to wash (something else) I wash my hair. Subject doing action to self. I wash my clothing. Subject doing action to something or someone else.

Me lavo el pelo. Me lavo el pelo. La mamá lava el pelo de su bebé.

Reflexive Conjugations You are not learning a new conjugation. The verbs are the same conjugation that they always have been. You just need to learn the reflexive pronouns that will come directly in front of the conjugated verb to show on whom the action is reflected.

Me = myself

Te = yourself (s.fam.)

Me = myself Te = yourself (s.fam.) Se = himself ; herself; yourself (s.form.)

Me = myself Nos = ourselves Te = yourself (s.fam.) Se = himself ; herself; yourself (s.form.)

Me = myselfNos = ourselves Te = yourself (s.fam.)Os = yourselves (pl.fam) Se = himself ; herself; yourself (s.form.) Se = themselves; yourselves (pl. form)

Reflexive Conjugations Now put the reflexive pronoun with the verb. For an example, conjugate the verb levantarse. levantarse = to get up

Me levanto

Te levantas

Me levanto Te levantas Se levanta

Me levanto Nos levantamos Te levantas Se levanta

Me levantoNos levantamos Te levantas Os levantáis Se levanta
