READING Reading techniques will help you read efficiently: Previewing Skimming Scanning

Previewing Look at the title, subtitles, author, source and try to guess what the text is about Read the introductory paragraph Consider what you already know about the topic Look at the visuals If you are reading in a foreign language try and predict which economic terms and general expressions might appear in the text

Skimming Read to get the main idea Can you identify the main arguments? Formulate them in your own words Write down your expectations: what do you expect to learn from the text? Do you have questions about the text at this point? Are you supposed to answer some questions? Number the paragraphs (for better orientation)

Scanning Read the topic sentences (usually the first sentence in each paragraph) Read the topic sentence and the last sentence in each paragraph Look for key words and finally... Reading the whole text you may need to take / make notes... (procedure presented in a separate PPT)

TAKING NOTES WHILE READING Four-step procedure: SKIM to get the rough idea of the content (title, introductory paragraph, pictures?) SCAN to spot the essential: underline the main points (key words, topic sentences) GROUP PARAGRAPHS (how many parts of the text? headings, subheadings?) ESTABLISH LOGICAL RELATIONS between parts of the text ↓ STRUCTURE! (Logical relations expressed by signalling devices)
