****** Can plan scientific enquiries controlling for variables where necessary Can develop a line of enquiry and make predictions based on evidence Can test predictions, identifying independent, dependent and control variables Santa’s Candy Cane Calamity Santa needs you!

****** Can plan scientific enquiries controlling for variables where necessary Can develop a line of enquiry and make predictions based on evidence Can test predictions, identifying independent, dependent and control variables The problem Santa’s elves work very hard at this time of year. With all the present wrapping and loading up the sacks, they need a diet with a high energy content (did you know elves have a very high metabolic rate?) Mrs Claus has come up with a solution – Candy cane crush. Using her own special recipe (mostly North Pole water, candy canes and a hint of magic)

****** Can plan scientific enquiries controlling for variables where necessary Can develop a line of enquiry and make predictions based on evidence Can test predictions, identifying independent, dependent and control variables To make enough Candy Cane crush for all the elves Mrs Claus has to work fast (there are a lot of elves at the North Pole) The delay in production is dissolving the candy canes in the cold melt water. Rudolph told Mrs Claus (yes the reindeer can talk) that if she can speed up this process then she can make enough candy crush for all the elves The problem

****** Can plan scientific enquiries controlling for variables where necessary Can develop a line of enquiry and make predictions based on evidence Can test predictions, identifying independent, dependent and control variables Dissolving candy canes What do you know about candy canes? What are they made of? What will they be dissolving in? What do you know about dissolving already Could you make a prediction based on this knowledge? Write your ideas down on your planning sheet

****** Can plan scientific enquiries controlling for variables where necessary Can develop a line of enquiry and make predictions based on evidence Can test predictions, identifying independent, dependent and control variables Mrs Clause needs proof Mrs Claus only wants hard science. You need to plan an investigation to give her the information she needs to speed up production. There might be more than one way to speed up production – you could investigate them all if you work quickly You need to think about what variables you will measure and which you will control.

****** Can plan scientific enquiries controlling for variables where necessary Can develop a line of enquiry and make predictions based on evidence Can test predictions, identifying independent, dependent and control variables The hypothesis Santa’s chief elf has arrived with a hypothesis The rate of dissolving of the candy canes is linked to the temperature of the water Rudolph has a different hypothesis The rate of dissolving of the candy canes is linked to the size of the candy cane pieces

****** Can plan scientific enquiries controlling for variables where necessary Can develop a line of enquiry and make predictions based on evidence Can test predictions, identifying independent, dependent and control variables The experiment You need to make sure you are safe – humans don’t heal as quickly as elves. What equipment will you need? What readings will you take? What will you need to measure? What variables will you control? How will you make your test fair How will you record your findings – you need to design a results table to put your results in.

****** Can plan scientific enquiries controlling for variables where necessary Can develop a line of enquiry and make predictions based on evidence Can test predictions, identifying independent, dependent and control variables Your findings Mrs Claus isn’t a scientist. She needs the results presenting in a format she can read – a line graph or bar chart (you decide based on your variables) would be best. What did you find out? How did your findings relate to your hypothesis? Explain for Mrs Claus what you found out

****** Can plan scientific enquiries controlling for variables where necessary Can develop a line of enquiry and make predictions based on evidence Can test predictions, identifying independent, dependent and control variables Were your predictions right?
