1 Investigating Dissolving
LO: To make an hypothesis and carry out an experiment To represent data by charts and graphs. TASK: Can you match the words witht the definition? Do you know what they mean? Collect What something is measured in. Equipment Write it down. Experiment Information in a clear way. Measure Look, listen, hear and smell. Observe Information from an experiment. Record What you use in an experiment. Results Get something. Table To read from a piece of equipment. Units Practical in science.

2 Making a hypothesis You are going investigate how temperature will affect the time it takes for sugar to dissolve. You are going to time how long it takes for sugar to dissolve in hot water, cold water and room temperature water On the worksheet, make a prediction, how do you think temperature will effect the time it takes for sugar to dissolve

3 What are the variables? 1.What is the
Independent Variable – Variable that I change Dependent Variable – Variable that I measure/observe 2.What variables are you going to control to make the experiment valid (fair)? 2009 S1 Science: Investigating Science Lesson 3

4 Method Look at the equipment in front of you
Discuss with your partner how you will use the equipment to carry out your experiment. In your book, write down a step by step method which you will follow. Eg. 1. 2. 3. Once Ms. Lee has seen your method and you have copied a results table in to your book you can start the practical

5 Investigation Number 2. You ar going to heat water in a beaker and measure the temperature every 30 seconds until the temperature reaches 90oC. Time (s) Temp (oC) 30 60 90

6 A problem Plot a line graph to determine the relationship
When plotting the variables on the graph: Independent variable is on the horizontal axis Dependent variable on the vertical axis How do you think the graph would look? Try it and compare with your friend’s

7 Scale Axis Labels Title Plotting a graph.
Remember to put a title, with a pen. Scale Axis Labels Title Remember to plot your results a s neat crosses with a sharp pencil. Try and draw a line of best fit. X X X X Make sure you label your axes with what you’re measuring and remember units! X X

8 Drawing a results table.
Titles of the things you are measuring What you are measuring in, the units Time (mins) Distance (cm) The thing you are changing goes in the first column Always use a pencil and ruler to draw a neat table.

9 Spot the mistake plenary
