1 Objective: To describe how temperature affects the rate of reaction
Temperature and Rate of Reaction Objective: To describe how temperature affects the rate of reaction 6* To explain how temperature affects rate of reaction in terms of particles 5 To plan and collect data to support / disprove a hypothesis. 4 To identify what happens to a chemical reaction when you heat it up. Temperature, Heat, Rate of Reaction.

2 Reactions How do we know if a reaction has taken place? Color change
Gas given off Precipitate forms Temperature change pH change

3 What do we mean by ‘rate of reaction?’
Is a way of describing how fast the reaction is happening. Is it quick – like gas burning from a bunsen burner Is it slow – like a rusting nail?

4 Hypothesis: “The temperature of the water affects how fast the vitamin C tablet will dissolve” You have: Vitamin C Tablets Water Baths of 30, 45 and 60 degrees Tap Water Beakers Timers

5 You are going to plan an experiment to test your ideas
Step 1 Decide what you will do to investigate your question Step 2 Independent Variable What are you going to change? Dependent Variable What are you going to measure? Step 3 Getting Accurate results What variables do you need to control to make it a fair test? Step 7 What do you Predict will happen and why? Planning an investigation Step 4 Getting Precise Results What scale of measurement are you going to use? Step 5 What equipment are you going to need? Step 6 Do you need a control in your experiment?

6 Time for vitamin c tablet to dissolve(sec)
Experiment Temperature (oC) Time for vitamin c tablet to dissolve(sec) Test 1 Test 2 Test 3 Average 30oC 45oC 60oC

7 Particles How do the particles differ in cold water and boiling water?
In boiling water the particles collide more often and with more force – they are moving quicker and with more energy…

8 Collisions At higher temperatures molecules move faster as they have more energy – as a result there are more collisions per second and so a faster reaction occurs

9 Collisions If the temperature is increased:
The reactant particles move more quickly The particles collide more often The rate of reaction increases
