Presentation transcript:

St. Joseph’s Catholic School Assessment Meeting October 2015 From September 2014 the Government abolished the national level system because they believed it was too difficult for parents to understand and was too prescriptive and no longer appropriate to assess the new curriculum. This left every school in the country with the task of devising their own assessment system. The Darlaston Cluster designed their own assessment system based on the non-negotiable objectives from the National Curriculum and Walsall LA’s model of data collection. We are working towards a system where children in Darlaston schools are all being assessed using the same system. This means that there is consistency when pupils move schools and when they transfer to secondary school.

St. Joseph’s Catholic School Assessment Meeting October 2015 The Steps system The new assessment system is based on Steps. Children are placed on the step grid from Nursery to the end of Y6. This step system then continues at Secondary School. Each step represents what a child is expected to achieve in Reading, Writing and Maths during a half-term. Behind each step are non-negotiable objectives, which the children must achieve to complete that step. This is based on the national curriculum requirements for each year. However, some children may achieve different objectives in a different step and this is fine. Children are expected to make 2 steps progress a term in Years 1-6 and 1 step per term in the Foundation stage. The steps the children have achieved are then inserted into a grid and attainment and progress are tracked and analysed.
