U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey Decision Support Tools and USGS Data Management Best Practices Cassandra Ladino USGS Chesapeake Bay Workshop - 05/13/14

Synthesize and provide science to support ecosystem management  Objectives: Provide and Manage Information  CBP/EO Goals: Commitment to share and increase access to scientific results and information.  USGS Mission Areas: Ecosystems, Water, Core Science Systems: Analytics, Synthesis, and Libraries (Community for Data Integration)

Overview  Decision Support Tools  Data Management Activities 1) Data Management Workflows 2) Data Integration 3) Data Access  Science Impacts  Information for Scientists

Decision Support Tools  Nontidal Network water quality trends and results website and interactive map  Chesapeake LandScope website - protected lands reporting tool  *New* Custom web page interface to USGS Chesapeake Bay data on ScienceBase

Nontidal Network Website

Chesapeake LandScope 3 Protected Lands Reports: Ownership Land Cover Type Unprotected vs. Protected

USGS Chesapeake Bay Website – Data Portal

Data Management Activities  Providing solutions for 3 things: Data Management (DM) Workflows Data Integration Data Access

Lots of Science Workflow Models!

Data Management Workflows  Develop a Data Management Plan framework (DMPf) for all science themes.  Develop specific DMP’s for fish health and water quality contaminants field samples and scientific results.  Increase usage of the USGS Chesapeake Bay Studies data community on ScienceBase.

Data Stages in a DM Workflow Terminal Endpoint Options Customize data flow model by choosing inputs, outputs, and storage locations appropriate for each project. Disposition Schedules * CSAS Web Release Workflow + science Data Catalog Raw Data Stage Base Data Stage Project/ Derived Data Products

Data Stages in a DM Workflow * CSAS Web Release Workflow + science Data Catalog Raw Data Stage Base Data Stage Project/ Derived Data Products As data move through these stages, how are we: Creating meta information Managing quality Protecting that resource Providing access to that resource

Data Integration  Develop a relational database on the EGSC’s Research and Development Computing Cluster (RDCC) Integrate fish health and contaminants information. Increased exploration and analytical capability of science data. Protect and centralize data for long term storage.

Data Access  Expand and maintain existing data store on ScienceBase.  Develop custom web page interface using ScienceBase API.  Make data ready for “public release” available on Science Data Catalog.

ScienceBase  3 Purposes: Archiving/ Sharing Data DM Workflows (Data Stages) Web Service Endpoints for Datasets

Science Data Catalog  1 Purpose: Published Data Search

Science Impacts  Increase “Efficiency and Effectiveness” of science information.  Building data infrastructures upon which new science can grow.  Internal project teams, partners, and the public will have improved access to data and science results through data catalogs and web applications.  Chesapeake Bay project teams will be early adopters in the agencies push to implement Data Management best practices.  New analysis of fish health and contaminants data will be possible and will further discovery of scientific results.

Information For Scientist (See My Poster!)  Cassandra Ladino,  Data Management (DM)  DM Planning  DM Processing, Analyzing, Preserving hesapeake+Bay EGSC’s Research and Development Computing Cluster  DM Publishing/ Sharing Core Science Systems’ Web Release Workflow NEW Metadata Standard – ISO-19115_2
