U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 Kevin T. Gallagher and Linda C. Gundersen September 5, 2012 CDI Science Support Framework and FY13 Proposal Process

2 CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 Purpose The purpose of this CDI Webinar is to engage and inform the Community and other interested individuals about the CDI Science Support Framework (SSF), FY12 projects currently underway, and plans for FY13. Today’s meeting provides the opportunity to learn about a variety of CDI science support activities, products, and tools through presentations and demonstrations. Save the Date for The National Map and Community for Data Integration Conference May 20-24, 2013 (tentative) Today’s Meeting

3 CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 Quotes from the Office of Science and Technology:  Data-Enabled Science (“Big Data”) – “Improved approaches are needed to derive science and social value from the vast amount of data we are now acquiring.”  “Research and development in such approaches as algorithms, data mining, analytics, and visualization tools should be priorities.” The President’s Science Policy

4 CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 The Science Strategy Points Out the Requirement to Be Interdisciplinary  The inherent complexity of nature  The need to explore questions and problems that are not confined to a single discipline  The need to solve societal problems  The power of new technologies (Committee on Facilitating Interdisciplinary Research, National Academy of Sciences, 2004)

5 CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 Data Integration: What is it?  It appears intangible.  Is it a concept?  A picture?  An Architecture?  A Portal?  Data Standards?  A Data Warehouse?  Will we know it when we see it?  How will we measure progress towards it?

6 CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 Data Integration: What is it? Access & Discovery Portals, Registries, Catalogs Standards for Exchange Protocols, Metadata, Standards Interoperable Data Semantic Standards, Vocabulary, Taxonomy, Schema or Dictionary Tools Data Extraction, Transformation, Load Applications Geospatial Analysis, Modeling, Visualization

7 CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012 Access & Discovery  Search Tools  Indexed Science Content (by geographic location, science topic, or time)  Comprehensive Science Catalog (Data, Publications, Specimens, Projects, etc.)  Web Services  Portals Applications  Geospatial Viewers  Quantitative and Analytical Models  3-D and 4-D Visualization  High Performance Computing Standards & Tools  XML, and evolving international standards (GeoSciML)  Data Loading, Metadata, and Data Exchange Interoperable Data  Semantics, Integrated Data Modeling, Archiving and Retrieval  Data Hosting Capability  Extraction, Load, and Query Data Integration: A Project View

8 CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  Chartered with over 250 members  Sharing our stories once a month  Unified behind a long-term vision  Identifying and prioritizing projects that can deliver value or savings in the short term  Leveraging best practices  Serving on technical working groups  Evolving solutions through pilot development & testing  Working with partners: ESIP, DataONE, Earthcube, GIN, OneGeology, CUASI, etc. The Community for Data Integration Today: Driving the Agenda, Defining Scope, Priority, and Tasks

9 CDI Webinar Sept. 5, 2012  Focus on targeted efforts that yield short-term benefits to science  Leverage existing capabilities (“bottom up”)  Solution or methodology that can be replicated or repeated as well as scaled (size and programs)  Sustainability  Seek efficiencies or substantial return on investment  Expose corporate data  Organize science models and outputs  Preserve and access project data Community for Data Integration Project Selection Guidelines
