Reading Strategies Marking the Text: METACOGNITIVE MARKERS

What are they? Using metacognitive markers involves marking the text with symbols to reflect the thinking you are doing as you read. After reading, you can scan the text and use your metacognitive markers to quickly find evidence when you are writing or talking about a text.

Types of Markers ? Use a question mark for questions you have about the text.  “I don’t understand this”  “I wonder why they did this”  “I am confused by…” ! Use an exclamation point for a reaction to what you are reading.  “Wow I can’t believe that happened”  “That makes me feel ______________ emotion” Use a Star for any use of figurative language or descriptive language.  “The language the author used helps to create a picture in my mind”

C: Use a C for a comment/connection about the text.  “ This reminds me of…”  Another book or text I read  My own life  Something that has happened in our world ___ Use an underline or highlighter to identify a key idea or detail in the text.  “This is detail or idea is very important to the article or story…” Use a circle for unknown words  “I may have seen this word before but I can’t define it”

? Questions/confusion ! Emotional Reaction Language that creates a picture in your mind C: Comments and connections to the text ___ or Highlight key details in the text Unknown Words
