2 Annotation: Annotation is a fancy word for taking notes. So why do we annotate? It gives us a deeper understanding of the text Helps us with reading comprehension (finding meaning in the text) Slows down fast readers Activates reading: meaning you are an active reader and not just zoning out

3 What should you write down when you’re annotating a text?
1. Questions about the text 2. Any feelings you may have 3. Anything that is confusing to you 4. Inferences and the text evidence to support them 5. Words you don’t know or are challenging for you What should you annotate? *You don’t have to use annotation with everything you read. Use if for books you have to read for school, news articles, educational and informational articles, etc.

4 How do we annotate? Circle unknown words so you can look them up later. ? Use a question mark for any questions you may have to ask the teacher. Use a star for important quotes or passages ! Use an exclamation point for something you want to come back to Write in the Margins OR on a sticky note Summarize each chapter AS SOON AS YOU’RE DONE READING IT Ask your own questions and write them down Write down any inferences and text evidence *If you don’t own the book, don’t write in it and use sticky notes. If you own the book ask your parents if you can write in it for annotation. If not, use sticky notes
