1 What are Metacognitive Markers?
Metacognitive markers are symbols used to mark the text you are reading that reflect the thinking you are doing as you read. After reading, your metacognitive markers can be used to quickly find evidence when you are talking or writing about the text. Meta – prefix that means beyond Cognitive – the process of knowing, perceiving, or remembering Metacognitive – “Big thinking” – thinking beyond as you read

2 The metacognitive markers we will use to interact with the text:
? Use a question mark for questions you have about the text. ! Use an exclamation point for a reaction to what you are reading (an "aha" moment or a surprise. * Use an asterisk for a comment you have or would like to share about the text. _ Use an underline to identify a key idea or detail in the text. W Use a “W” for something you wonder about. LOL Use if you find the text funny Circle words you do not know…yet
