Marking the Text Active Reading strategies.

2 What is Marking the Text
Marking the Text is an active reading strategy that will help you incorporate new vocabulary and identify essential ideas. You will receive an article. You will need a highlighter or different color utensil And a pencil/pen.

3 Before you read the Article
Scan the text for visuals and repeated words, you can also read the introduction/ first paragraph. (1 Minute) What do you believe this article is about? How do you know?

4 Step 1: Number Number each paragraph sequentially, placing the number to the left of the beginning of the paragraph or indentation. (1 minute) Helps locate facts and become organized.

5 Step 2: Circle Circle key terms, numbers (for a math problem), names, places, or dates, depending on the purpose for marking the text. Key terms can also include: Formulas, content-based vocabulary, names, theories, or a unique word, elements, variables, percentages. (3 minutes)

6 Step 3: Underline • Underline the author’s claims or relevant information. • A claim is the author’s statement or argument that has evidence to back it up. • Relevant information can be data, descriptions, explanations, evidence, or examples. (Read through the article and take 5-7 minutes to underline/highlight.)

Underline the author’s claims and other relevant information… You can find this information if you look out for: Concerns Claims Data “if- then” Main ideas Processes Explanations Evidence Examples

8 Step 4 Star words you don’t know or understand in the context of the article. Define and research these words to assist your comprehension. (4 minutes)

9 Next activity (Mark the text around the room)
