2 Why Annotate you ask? 1. It keeps you awake.
2. Helps you remember your ideas 3. Writing while reading brings words and sentences sharply in focus 4. You begin to develop a conversation with the author

3 Interact with the literature! Make A Trail
A. Leave question marks and comments/questions B. Exclamation marks where you agree or notes where you disagree! C. Emotional symbols, pictures D. Graphic organizers to keep track of the story

4 Interact with the Literature – write comments
A. Comments – underline, highlight, write in the margins Circle new vocabulary and look it up – create a glossary Summarize what the chapter is saying Leave a trail on the page – show you understand the text B. Associations like: Your personal experience – text to self Another piece of literature - text to text Something in the present - text to world Cross references to other parts of the book

5 Look for the answer to WHY
Why does the author use that literary device? Why is the setting in the story important? Why might a character’s introduction be relevant at this point in the story? Ask questions and try to find the answers. Build a bridge!
