Time Remapping: Film and Editing Task By Sarah Whiley

Time Remapping Postmodernism films use these techniques to break conventions of typical films and make the audiences aware that they are watching a constructed piece of film. Such techniques directors would use is: Narratives that question whether modern progress is for the ‘good’ of society. A critique of mass production. Narrative themes that challenge conventional film narratives (Anti Heroes, unclear/mixed representations) Non-Linear narratives challenge the 3 act conventions by disrupting the chronology of the narrative sequence. Anti-Narratives disrupt the flow of the narrative. Meta-reference when the audience is made aware they are watching a film.

Filming Today, we filmed a sequence with some action in it that we could time remap. We shot a variety of clips that included, rolling, jumping, and sliding. When filming, we thought about the types of time remapping we could do to the clips and how it would work when we come to editing. We also paid homage to The Matrix, in a humorous way, and copied the jump. Homage is used in many films such as, Kill Bill’s homage to Bruce Lee’s yellow jump suit. We are be breaking the fourth wall in our sequence by slowing, freezing and speeding up our clips. This will make the audience aware they are watching a film, and therefore will break the fourth wall of realism

Editing Firstly, we opened Premier and imported our clips into the timeline. We then created Key Frames around the ‘interesting bit’. In between the key frames, we were able to slow down that selection of our clip by pulling down the yellow bar to 20%. Then, by dragging one half of a Key Frame selector, we created a speed ramp to make it flow more and look better. To stop the speed ramp being so harsh, we made into a natural curve by using the handlebars to create a Bezier curve. Our edit: Time RemappingTime Remapping
