Warm Up Think about the geography of your immediate area. 1. What major cities or towns is your school located near? 1. Describe the physical characteristics of the landscape in which you live (mountainous, flat, forested, coastal). 2. Describe a different area of the country that has a very different geography from your own. For example, The Rocky Mountains After 5 minutes, you will “turn and talk” to discuss your answers.

Classroom Expectations 1. Lets review some of the expectations and classroom procedures that we have gone over last week. 2. Lets briefly go over some of the current event guidelines that we have discussed last week. Turn and talk with your classmates to discuss.

Quote of the Day….. Turn and talk to interpret this quote.

Objective SWBAT understand what methods geographers use to show the Earths surface. (Remember, write everything in red!)

Hearing reports from explorers who had sailed the oceans hundreds of years ago, geographers realized the earth was not flat. Up until this point in time, explorers used flat maps to see the location of various areas

What else might people refer to other than maps to show where places on the earth might be? Hint!!! If you get stuck, look around the room (Turn and talk) Now that people have realized the earth is not flat, a globe, or a spherical model of the planet, became the most accurate way to show the earth

Why might a globe be the most accurate way to view the earth? (Turn and talk to discuss) A globe of the earth best shows the size of continents and the shapes of landmasses and bodies of water. Globes also show true distance and location.

Guided Practice As a class, we will popcorn read a passage titled, “Differences Between Maps and Globes” In what ways would a map be more informative than a globe? In what ways would a globe be more informative than a map?

Independent Practice Independently read a passage titled “Hemispheres” and answer the following questions: 1. Why do geographers use imaginary lines when showing Earth’s surface? 1. What is the significance of the Equator? 1. What is the significance of the Prime Meridian?

Group Work You will will receive a map titled “Analyzing Globes and Hemispheres” Group 1-Name two continents on the Northern Hemisphere. Group 2-Name two continents on the Southern Hemisphere. Group 3-Name two continents in the Eastern Hemisphere. Group 4- Name two continents in the Western Hemisphere.

Closure Each group will be called upon to share their answer with the class.
