Teaching Time

This evening we will be… showing how maths strategies develop across the year groups show you the school’s calculations policy and how you can use this to help your child with their maths key areas where you can help your child with their maths useful resources and websites

…and we have 10 minutes!

Vocabulary we use when measuring time

Days, weeks, months, years, decades, century Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday Today, Tomorrow, yesterday, fortnight, after, before, later, morning, afternoon, evening, day, night am: pm: January, February, March, April. May June…etc Hour, Minute, Second, Long hand, short hand, Analogue clock, digital clock, timer, stop watch, past, to, ½ past ¼ past, ¼ to midnight, noon Numbers ! Calendar, timetable, elapsed time

Reception Year 1 Tell the time to the hour and half past the hour and draw the hands on the clock face to show these Tips: use analogue clocks- not digital Year 2 Tell the time to 5 minutes including quarter past/to Tips: use analogue clocks-to set times- ie tea at half past five use language of 1/2 past 1/4past

Year 3 Read the time on a 12–hour digital clock and to the nearest 5 minutes Read an analogue clock Calculate time intervals and find start or end times for a given time interval Introduce ROMAN NUMERALS Year 4 Read time to the nearest minute Use am, pm and 12-hour clock notation Choose units of time to measure time intervals, e.g. seconds, minutes or hours Calculate time intervals from clocks and timetables

Year 5 Read timetables and time using 24-hour clock notation Use a calendar to calculate time intervals Year 6 All the above plus read from digital and analogue Solve multi-step worded problems including reading and interpreting timetables

How long is the movie? I started watching a movie at 3:30 pm and it ended at 4:45 pm.

Elapsed Time The movie started at 3:30 and ended at 4:45. How long was the movie? +30 min 3: = 75 minutes = 1 hour 15 minutes 4:004:30 4: min +15 min Strategy: Start at 3:30 and add time increments to the hour or ½ hour, (benchmarks), then continue until end time.

Time over the 12:00 hour How much time is there between 10:30 am and 2:45 pm?

Elapsed Time – over 12 o’clock hour How much time is there between 10:30 am and 2:45 pm? +30 min. 1 hr. + 2 hr min min. = 3 hr. 75 min. = 4 hr. 15 min. 12:00 noon 2:00 2:45 +2 hours +45 min 11:00 10:30 +1 hour Strategy: Add increments to 12:00, then continue benchmark increments.

Find the ending time What time is 4 hours and 30 minutes from 6:55?

Finding the ending time – Student 1 What time is it 4 hours and 30 minutes from 6:55? The time is 11:25, which is 4 hrs. and 30 min. after 6:55. 11:0011: min 7:00 6:55 +4 hr. +5 min Strategy: Add minute increments to the ½ hour benchmark, then hours, then minutes.

Find the start time What time did we start on our trip if we arrived at 8:17 and it took 3 hours and 10 minutes?

Finding the start time What time did we start on our trip if we arrived at 8:17 and it took 3 hours and 10 minutes? -10 min.-3 hr. The start time is 5:07. 5:075:17 8:17 Strategy: Subtract the hours then minutes.

In Year 2 and Year 6 the children take National tests called SATs in Maths. Here are some examples of types of questions, more can be found online.

Level 4 questions 9:20

What can I do to help?

Mental maths games Times table practice Set times for your child on an analogue clock- o’clock- ½ past, ¼ past, ¼ to 5 past etc encourage them to remind you
