Market Analysis  The internet of Things ◦ Indicators show increasing IoT impact: 25 billion devices connected in 2015, 50 billion in 2020 (source IBSG) $4.8 trillion in 2012, $7.3 trillion in 2017 (source IDC) Largest impact in health care and manufacturing (source McKinsey Global Institute) ◦ In terms of the SandS project, this view of the future of the IoT market shall be taken into account in terms of our exploitation strategy, and should be considered in the future actions to be taken in our exploitation plan.

Market Analysis  Smart Appliances ◦ Pike Research: smart appliance market will grow from $613 million in 2012 to $35 billion in ◦ Companies (Panasonic, Toshiba) are developing smart appliances. For now, they are too expensive to gain rapid acceptance. ◦ European and American companies (Whirlpool, GE, Electrolux, Bosch, Indesit) are doing the same. ◦ Korean counterparts (LG, Samsung) already have their own smart appliances. ◦ Market for smart appliances has not developed as quickly as expected, due to there are few smart appliances available. ◦ Four key markets drivers identified: Dynamic pricing: adequate pricing policies. Standards: communications between appliances. Control and privacy: consumers demand control over devices and own data confidentiality guaranteed. Education: smart appliances capabilities not well known yet by general public.

Intelligence means – Connectivity – Services available to the user Open source Privacy assured Combination of sensor data and social network data More than traditional domotic connected appliances: best practices generation by combining users’ experiences. ◦ IoT integrated into a social network: Toyota Friend Network: data generated by cars in a social network. Nike+: Sensors in shoes in a social network

Plans to approach the market  Focus on the benefits SandS may provide: ◦ Full exploitation of the appliance facilities: user will get a best service from the appliance ◦ Product lifetime extension: Improved capability of detecting incipient faults using sensors. ◦ Energy use optimisation: Appliances can work according to energy constrains. ◦ Greater use convenience: Ease of use and remote access, optimised results. ◦ Provision of value-added services: The value of the appliance an be enhanced by tacking services onto it. ◦ Low cost appliance enhancement: electronics inside appliances cheaper than current systems.
