Expanding Opportunities Advanced Coursework Network Information

Agenda The Opportunity for RI The Advanced Coursework Network About the Network Enrollment Processes Becoming a Network Member Becoming a Network Provider Implementation Q&A 2

The Opportunity for Rhode Island Great work is underway that could benefit from greater access for sustainability: ●Opportunity for schools to specialize and finance their efforts ●Many great local private colleges and community organizations AND Increased demand, desire and need from students, family and the economy: ●Presently, student ability to access AP and advanced courses depends on where they live. ●Increased need for personalization 3

A Solution: The Advanced Coursework Network LEAs, higher education and organizations will extend opportunities to students across the state. Courses will include Advanced Placement, Dual enrollment, work-based learning, advanced math, science, technology, engineering, art and languages. Courses may be offered face to face, blended or virtual for High School. Virtual only for Middle school. RIDE maintains an online course catalog that students, parents and schools can access at any time. Students can enroll in a course or courses from the network with their families or with school counselors. RIDE will cover the costs of student participation in Network courses. Network Providers are subject to continuous quality control oversight; tuition payments are indexed to student updates and student course completion 4

A Solution: The Advanced Coursework Network The Advanced Coursework Network is envisioned: to support districts and schools create opportunities for Rhode Island high school and middle school students to be a partnership between RIDE, Local Education Authorities, community based organizations and higher education institutions Alleviates student access disparities Expands learning time for students 5

A Solution: The Advanced Coursework Network Enables personalized, student-directed learning Makes “good” schools “great” Sets students up for postsecondary success Serves as a statewide economic development engine 6

About the Network: Definitions Advanced Coursework: Rigorous learning opportunities above and beyond core academic subjects which provide students opportunities to explore and gain experience with potential career and college tracks. Network Members: An LEA that voluntarily chooses to extend the Advanced Coursework Network Opportunities to students in their district and/or school. Network Providers: An LEA, Rhode Island based community based organization or higher education institution that delivers advanced coursework opportunities to Rhode Island students. 7

About the Network: Enrollment Process 1.Schools make courses available to Students / Families. 2.Students / Families visit RIDE Website to choose courses, on their own or with Counselor. 3.Student Application goes to RIDE System. 4.RIDE works with School to confirm student approval to take registered course or courses. 5.RIDE assigns student to Provider. 6.Provider maintains course enrolment and provides progress / enrollment reports at predetermined times through the course. 7.RIDE pays provider based on enrollment / progress at each report. 8

Becoming a Network Member As Network members, schools and districts will enable students and their families to choose to enroll in formerly unavailable high value academic- and career-focused courses while they remain enrolled at their public school. Network Member Coordinating Responsibilities ●Designate a staff member or members to ensure the consistent communication between your school and the Network coordinators. This staff member(s) can coordinate: ●Advising students on courses that match their interests and meet their graduation requirements ●Communicating the available opportunities, benefits and risks to students and families ●Assisting students with course registration ●Confirming enrollments with the Network Coordinators ●Ensuring final grades are coordinated with the Network Coordinators ●Reporting all Advanced Coursework Network data to RIDE as needed 9

Becoming a Network Provider As Network Provider, RI schools, districts, higher education institutions and community based organizations will open doors and create new opportunities for Rhode Island secondary students by offering previously unavailable coursework to students across the state. Network Provider Responsibilities ●Managing student enrollment, attendance and performance in your course or course(s) ●Providing regular communication ●Managing Provider tuition payment system as outlined in Provider agreement. ●Ensure final grades are coordinated ●Report all Advanced Coursework Network data ●Ensuring course teacher of records meet/maintain RIDE requirement to be highly-qualified to deliver designated coursework. ●Ensuring proper policies and procedures are executed with fidelity for student health and safety. 10

Partners in the Network State Economic Development Efforts – they regard the alignment of advanced coursework with the Workforce Board Priority Sectors as a key economic / workforce development program benefit Schools and Districts – Schools and districts will have two potential roles to play: - Member, in which they offer these opportunities to their students; and/or - Provider, in which they extend their courses to students across the state. The Network provides schools/districts with resources that expand their portfolio of course offerings for their students and allows they to be innovative in their course offerings by extending resources and impact without requiring unsustainable financial commitments Families – the Network will give students across our states access to courses that better prepare them for college and career. The Network provides students and families options as they consider the best way to create their individualized path. 11
