3  Model teaches to a “college readiness” standard rather than individual state standards  Assessments Methodology ◦ JR ACE  Pre-program – to place in appropriate activities/sessions  Remedial to Advanced  Post-program – measure JR ACE academic impact  Goal – all students, at minimum, meet national college readiness grade standard ◦ National Benchmarks  Measure student progress over time Key Points

4  All participating students will take a pre and post program evaluation at beginning and end of each summer and academic year. ◦ Will measure program progress ◦ Will measure against national & international benchmarks  There will be a cohort by year tracking system as students participate in year round retention activities  Students will develop and maintain a student portfolio during course of participation in program  Students will participate in an on-site higher education visit dependent on when activity is scheduled?  Parent/Guardian Involvement vital and implemented as required component to model.

5  In effort to utilize all resources and programs recognize need for collaboration without “reinventing the wheel”…  Partners include the following ◦ Partnering with School Districts (Middle School & High School Teachers & Counselors) ◦ Parents & Guardians seen as partners ◦ Community Organizations  Participation and/or collaboration with organizations whose focus is on developing college bound skills for middle and high school students. (Please refer to attached list of programs offered in State of Arizona by community organizations) ◦ Higher Ed Institute partnerships  Collaborating via student participation in college bridge programs  Or utilizing their program curriculum, students participate in academic enrichment and retention activities. (Please refer to attached list of programs offered in State of Arizona by higher ed. Institutes) Retention activities would occur as part of participation of these programs.

6  Monitored by Jr. ACE Staff ◦ Collaboration with School Districts  Monitor academic progress through counselors & teachers  Share Pre and Post assessments with school with parental & student permission. ◦ Collaboration with Parents & Guardians  Work with Parents or Guardians to monitor academic progress  Work with Parents or Guardians for successful participation in workshops and activities  Assist parents & Guardians with strategies to support lessons and skills learned at program ◦ Collaborate with School Districts & Parents/Guardians  Jr. ACE not privy to information that Parents/Guardians are.  After obtaining approval from parent, use AIMS and student grades for academic placement in program for first year.

7 Timeline  6 th Grade (Summer prior to entering 7 th Grade) ◦ Student accepted into program ◦ Student assessed with pre program evaluation (What evaluation measure used?)Reading & Math assessments – ask Steve. {Explore/ need to research types of assessments} Need to determine how often student should test. ◦ Could measure students using AIMS and grades. ◦ Student participates in two components of this summer portion of program  Academic workshops with curriculum focused on core areas  Curriculum based on national/international college readiness standards (i.e. ACT College Readiness Standards)  Reading, Writing, Math & Science – skills & concepts  Partner with area programs that offer curriculum in these areas  College readiness either through community organizational partnerships and/or via in-house. ◦ Parents/Guardians involvement via participation as required by curriculum or partnering programs.
