Presentation transcript:

 17 th century-Much land in northern Ireland colonized by English and Scottish Protestants  1800s-Economic differences separated the north and south  Division of the two sides officially came in 1800s when south wanted political independence from Britain while north wanted to stay connected with the mother land

 British passed Government of Ireland Act in 1920 which divided Ireland into two separate political places—accepted by Protestants, rejected by Catholics  Treaty signed that created the Irish Free State in 1921  Irish Free State becomes an independent republic in 1949 – Republic of Ireland born

 In 1891, Protestant population of the southern Ireland was 10%  In 1991 it was 3%  If trend were to continue, there would be no Protestants living in southern Ireland by year 2042 (Protestant)

 On January 30 th, 1972, 26 unarmed civil- rights protesters shot by members of the British Army in Derry, Northern Ireland  A brief quarrel erupted between Catholic demonstrators and British troops at a blockade  Two official investigations have been held; first cleared British soldiers of blame, other established killings as “unjustified and unjustifiable”

Well it was Sunday bloody Sunday When they shot the people there The cries of thirteen martyrs Filled the Free Derry air Is there any one amongst you Dare to blame it on the kids? Not a soldier boy was bleeding When they nailed the coffin lids! Sunday bloody Sunday Bloody Sunday's the day! You claim to be majority Well you know that it's a lie You're really a minority On this sweet emerald isle When Stormont bans our marches They've got a lot to learn Internment is no answer It's those mothers' turn to burn! Sunday bloody Sunday Bloody Sunday's the day!x2 You Anglo pigs and Scotties Sent to colonize the North You wave your bloody Union Jack And you know what it's worth! How dare you hold to ransom A people proud and free Keep Ireland for the Irish Put the English back to sea! Sunday bloody Sunday Bloody Sunday's the day!x2 Well, it's always bloody Sunday In the concentration camps Keep Falls Road free forever From the bloody English hands Repatriate to Britain All of you who call it home Leave Ireland to the Irish Not for London or for Rome! Sunday bloody Sunday Bloody Sunday's the day!

 29 innocent civilians died  Dozens of businesses completely blown away  Caused Northern Ireland’s largest ever medical operation

 The Irish Republican Army was a military organization consisting of those who supported independence from Britain  On August 18 th, IRA admitted responsibility for bombing but blamed local security for deaths  The IRA said that the bombing was part of the “ongoing war against the Brits. We offer apologies to the civilians".
