The Republic of Ireland was colonized by England. Ireland created the Irish Republican Army (IRA) planning to rebel against England. Government of Ireland Act: This act created two governments that each control a part of Ireland. Northern Ireland wanted to stay under the rule of England because Northern Ireland is majority protestant as well as England. However, Ireland is majority Roman Catholic.

The Troubles The Catholics that remained in Northern Ireland were discriminated against by Ulster Defense Association (UDA). They were forced to live in separate areas, they weren’t hired for certain jobs that were only available for protestants, they weren’t allowed the same voting practices, etc. War began between IRA and Protestant for the right to access political power, social provision, and cultural recognition. Bloody Sunday A crowd of Irish protesters stormed towards the British army troops and the British felt threatened. 26 of the protesters and bystanders were shot by British army. Hunger Strike IRA Prisoners were arrested because they were rebelling against the North. IRA prisoners wanted to not be seen as criminals. They refused to work, wear uniforms, and they wanted a ‘special category status’ in the prison.

Ten men including Bobby Sands died in Belfast Prison. Frank Stagg, a member of the IRA, died after 61 days of hunger strike.

This act stated that North Ireland would receive freedom of political power and shared powers with England and Southern Ireland. England would not allow agreement until Southern Ireland began disarment of weapons. Agreement was called off after Ireland made little progress of disarment.

The agreement stated that the Southern Ireland will remain its own country as well as North Ireland combined with England. If the North got enough votes, then they can combine with Southern Ireland.

This agreement allowed an elected assembly for North Ireland cross party cabinet with devolved powers Cross border bodies With this agreement there was hope for a long lasting peace between Ireland, North Ireland, and England. The peace didn’t last long and the conflict continues today.

What does the political cartoon mean or is trying to say? In 2-3 sentences, some up the Ireland conflict. Be sure to include who was involved. In what ways were the Roman Catholics in North Ireland discriminated against?
