3 Founding of Ireland  Since the “Act of Union” Ireland was part of the UK  During the “Great Famine” 30% of the Irish population died  In 1914 the British parliament issued the “Home Rule Act”, providing self- government to Ireland

4 Easter Rising  During Easter Rising in 1916 some Irish republicans wanted to give the throne of an independent Ireland to Prince Joachim of Prussia  The leaders were executed in the late 1910s by the British government  The military nationalist Sinn Féin party began to win popular support.

5 1918 general elections  The Sinn Féin won majority of Irish seats  Elected members refused to to attend the UK parliament  Instead founded revolutionary parliament in Dublin called Dáil Éireann  Declaring the existence of the new “Irish Republic”, they established a rival to the institutions of the UK  As coincidence with the first session of the Dáil, two RIC men were shot by Britains This led to the outbreak of the Anglo-Irish War

6 Government of Ireland Act 1920  On 3 May 1921 it described the partition of Ireland into two autonomous regions: Northern Ireland (six counties in NE) Southern Ireland (the rest)  Only Northern Ireland was established because of tumults

7 Anglo-Irish Treaty  Southern Ireland got superseded in 1922 by creation of the Irish Free State  Group of Irishmen was against the treaty It didn’t provide real independence Parliamentarians had to administer an oath to the British monarch The island was partitioned  Group was led by Éamon de Valera He led his supporters out of the Dáil Bloody war followed, which killed more people than the Anglo-Irish War  Finally, the Irish Free State was really founded on 6 September 1922
