Dynamics of Pilot Training Comair, Inc. Captain Larry Neal Dynamics of Pilot Training Initial and Continuing Qualification Good Morning to everyone. As the title shows I would like to share a few of the example and results from our training department this past year and some example of changes we made to provide the line operation with new hire pilots. Also some snap shots of the Continuing Qualification program and how the overall program works so well under ASF-230, 121-900 the AQP program.

Dynamics of New Hire Training Background Late in 2006 moving into 2007 we discussed the “low time” and “lower experienced” pilot market! Initial AQP data showed trends that required additional training resources. In 2008 AQP trends and analysis showed us that we needed to concentrate on the first time Continuing Qualification crew members. Changes were made and the results were seen immediately. In Late 2006 moving into 2007 we notice the trend of new pilots coming into the airline, were eager to be at airline level , but lacked the experience to operate within the high work load environment.

Identified the needed information to make a New Hire Pilot successful. Outline of the Launch Program. Ground School Sessions (Subjects Covered). Simulator Sessions (FTD/ Full Flight Simulator). Advanced Qualification Program data gave us a way to provide the needs of a New Hire pilot regardless of experience level entering the airline training environment. As the training department and the Human Resources department worked to find the right applicant to fill the First Officer seat we explored several options. List are a few of the options we explored.

As average class experience varies, Dynamics of New Hire Training As average class experience varies, we can modify our training program with AQP Class average experience 600 - 1,000 TT Advantage 0f AQP gave us the ability to change and adapt our training to the changing new hire environment.

Overview of Initial Footprint Dynamics of New Hire Training Overview of Initial Footprint Basic Indoctrination 7 days Aircraft Systems 6 days General Subjects 8 days Systems Integration 4 days Simulator 17 days (4 FTD’s Procedures Validation, 5 Simulator Training Sessions, Maneuvers Validation, 2 Loft Preparation Sessions, 2 Loft Sessions, 2 Line Operations Evaluations.) After launch program, the crew member moved on the regular training displayed here. After a period of time and evaluation of the training program we move the lessons learned into the regular program putting special emphasis on commutations, CRM skills, and checklist proto calls, normal and emergency QRH, and checklist. One change we found to be very important in the Launch program was that New Hire pilots need an understanding of airline standards and evaluation proto call. Some from the colleges and Flight Schools had completed phase checks and understood the requirements to meet the qualification for their certificates, but did not understand the standard for the airline, Example Oral, and check ride in a one on one environment.

Dynamics of New Hire Training This chart shows the Pass Rate for 2006 and the transition to 2007 and the need to change in the training program. You can see in the second QT of 2007 the need for more adjustment were needed, we added a second day of LOE prep, covered subjects, Load Manifests, weather requirements, Op. specs. And a review of systems. The overall result was as shown.

First Time Initial Pass Rate > 96% Dynamics of New Hire Training We at this time enjoy an average of pass rate of 97%, of the other 3% we still lose students in the ckeckride environment and IOE. First Time Initial Pass Rate > 96%

AQP ~ Phase 5 Initial Upgrade Differences Dynamics of Training We have found that the Advanced Qualification Program, this the ability to make changes very quickly to the program, either in Initial or the other programs that we are very happy with. The ability to adjust to meet the needs of any pilot in training is very important. AQP is a great source of data a provide almost immediate signs of a trend of a change that needs to be made within the training program. Upgrade Differences
