Goals For Today Review Employment First Basics Share a bit about the present environment Have a discussion about our opportunities for success together moving forward

1/8/20163 Employment First -ODDS Policy (2008) titled “Employment for Working Age Individuals." requiring integrated employment services be specifically addressed and the “first” day service considered in each person’s Individual Support Plan. -ODDS Internal Initiative highlighting the need to raise expectations and implement better practices around employment for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities

Employment First Outreach Set the Goal Believe it Take Action Stay Focused Share it Re-commit to employment in a sustainable way

5 The BIG GOAL…. People with developmental disabilities are employed at the same rate as their peers without disabilities

6 OREGON’S BIG GOAL…. “Employment is the gateway to full citizenship” The economic situation is no reason for us to abandon our vision and values. Clearer Measures Decrease the number of high school transition age students entering facility based employment services. Decrease the number of adults currently served in facility based employment services. Increase the number of individuals in a “pathway to employment”.

Discovery-PINS ! What are the preferences, interests needs and needs, and strengths of young adult? Do not think about specific of specific jobs but vocational themes

because not everyone can be a “courtesy clerk”. …but ask yourself, “why would this person be good for such a job? what hard skills does this person possess?” FILING – recognizing color codes, alphabetic organization, accountability.

If we have time……. 15 Minutes and 20 places where your Career Makes Sense Let’s do a “Discovery Exercise

Discovery! What businesses are in my community? What are the jobs people perform? Who performs these jobs? Is there a better way?

Public Transportation Training These are life-long tools we are giving to the people we support!

Next Steps 1.Within a set time frame, explore a set number of businesses within a 5 mile radius. 2.There are a lot of businesses within this distance, so know that you will do this a number of times! 3.Teach bus routes within the radius. 4.Expose yourself to new businesses, meet the employers, and find your niche!
