Body Mechanics STANDARD 2.0 The students will apply the skills and techniques necessary for risk management and injury prevention Objective 2.3 Analyze and demonstrate principles of body mechanics
Body mechanics Body mechanics is the coordination of body alignment, balance, and movement
Body alignment Refers to correct positioning of head, back and limbs
Posture Position of body parts in relation to each other
Mobility The ability to move
Balance The ability to maintain a steady position that does not tip.
A device used to support body at work to reduce damage when lifting, moving and transferring patients Body support
Techniques to employ Use stronger, larger muscles to perform tasks which require physical effort
Lifting When moving a heavy object, try to push or pull instead of lifting the item
Proper Lifting Tips TUCK: Tighten stomach muscles and tuck pelvis to keep your back in balance BEND KNEES: Bending at your knees centers your balance & distributes weight. HUG: Hold object lifted as close to your body as possible. Gradually straighten to standing position.
Lifting large weights Get help if object feels too heavy to lift
How to move Lift in a smooth motion to prevent injury
Positioning Maintain good posture
Be careful! Avoid twisting the body
Base of support Bend knees, keep back straight, spread feet about one foot apart, use leg muscles when lifting
Basic rules/principles of body mechanics 1. Maintain broad base of support 2. Bend at the hips and knees (back straight) 3. Use the strongest muscles to do the job 4. Carry heavy objects close to the body 5. Avoid twisting your body as you work 6. Avoid bending for long periods of time 7. Use the weight of your body 8. Get Help (PRN)
