El presente en -AR Today you will learn: I can conjugate “ar” verbs, to express actions in the present tense.

The fundamental parts of the Spanish verb THE INFINITIVE: THE BASIC, UNCONJUGATED FORM, THE ONE THAT CORRESPONDS TO THE ENGLISH “TO DO” (SOMETHING). FOR EXAMPLE, TO SPEAK, TO WORK, TO SING, ETC. The Spanish infinitive always ends in r

hablar comer escribir cantar aprender leer salir conocer costar correr finalizar freír The fundamental parts of the Spanish verb

THE ENDING: THE LAST TWO LETTERS OF THE INFINITIVE. The ending always consists of two letters. The fundamental parts of the Spanish verb

The infinitive – the ending = the stem hablar cantar finalizar The fundamental parts of the Spanish verb

THE STEM OR ROOT: WHATEVER IS LEFT AFTER REMOVING THE ENDING FROM THE INFINITIVE. The stem can consist of a variable number of letters, depending on the length of the verb in question. The fundamental parts of the Spanish verb

The infinitive: The basic, unconjugated form of the verb. estudiar The fundamental parts of the verb The ending: The last two letters of the infinitive. The stem: What is left after taking the ending from the infinitive. ar estudi

When we conjugate any verb we always begin with its stem. To conjugate: To put a verb in its correct person and number so that we know who is doing the action. Verb Conjugation

a hablar ahbloa ah asa ahblaa hablmosa áhablisá ahblana Verbs of the 1 st conjugation (-ar) All persons and numbers are based on the stem. Notice which vowel gets the emphasis! yo tú Ud. él ella nosotros/as vosotros/as ellos ellas Uds.

El presente de los verbos -AR Spanish verbs can recognized by their endings. All verbs in Spanish end in: -AR -ER -IR Verbs are words that express… ACTIONS Ex: to sing, to dance, to play, etc. HABLAR (to talk) COMER (to eat) ESCRIBIR (to write) These basic forms that end in –AR, -ER, -IR are called INFINITIVES! What does an infinitive do? It tells what the action is but not who performed the action.

The Spanish infinitive always ends in r hablar comer escribir cantar aprender leer salir conocer costar correr finalizar freír The fundamental parts of the Spanish verb

El presente de los verbos -AR To say who performed the action, you must CONJUGATE the verb. Huh? What is “conjugating”? Conjugating a verb means changing it into one of its 6 forms to say who performed an action.

El presente de los verbos -AR Let's see how it works!!! Take the verb HABLAR: Step 1: Take off the -AR. Now we're left with the VERB STEM "HABL-"... Step 2: Add the appropriate VERB ENDING to match the subject. There are 6 different VERB ENDINGS for -AR verbs in the present: yo -o tú -as él/ella -a usted nosotros/as -amos vosotros/as -áis ellos/ellas -an ustedes

After doing Steps 1 & 2, you should end up with all the present tense forms of HABLAR... El presente de los verbos -AR HABLAR – to talk / speak yo hablo I speak tú hablas you speak él/ella habla usted he/she speaks you speak (form) nosotros/as hablamos we speak vosotros/as habláis you speak (pl.) ellos/ellas hablan ustedes they speak you speak (pl. form)
