Presentation transcript:

Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties Meagan Ricks “Neighbors helping neighbors since 1987”

ADFAC  Nonprofit agency supporting impoverished families and individuals in the Appalachian counties which is made possible by a number of staff, volunteers, contributors, and sponsors.  Assistance programs include social services and affordable housing.

 ADFAC was started in the mid-1980’s as a means to assist the low- income population of the Appalachian area.  The great need for assistance pushed the members of ADFAC to advance the program to a recognized public charity and it became official in January of 1987.

 ADFAC, an independent non-profit agency, exists to serve the basic needs of primarily low-income residents in Anderson and surrounding Appalachian counties. ADFAC's goal is to help families become stable and self-sufficient through a variety of direct assistance services provided by our Social Services and Affordable Housing programs.

 ADFAC’s vision is of sustainable, healthy and viable communities where families are self- sufficient, productive and free of the need for continued public assistance whenever possible.

 The main focus of ADFAC is to meet the needs of the most vulnerable individuals in our community. Services provided include:  short-term assistance for basic human needs  affordable solutions for home rehabilitation and new construction  energy conservation  youth services  education, counseling and/or referrals

Social Services  The main goal of ADFAC’s Social Service Program is to prevent homelessness and encourage and assist in the development of successful independence.  During crises, families and individuals may be provided with short-term financial assistance and counseling in order to aid them in reaching a stable position.  Assistance offered by ADFAC’s Social Services include:  Utilities  Rent and mortgage  Crisis Cupboard  School Supplies  Warm Fuzzies Gifts for Teens  Prescription Assistance  Weatherization GreenKits  Short-term Counseling  Referrals

Social Services  Applicants to the program are screened to determine eligibility and appropriate forms of assistance.  Clients must be in school, employed, searching for employment, elderly or disabled in order to qualify for social services.  ADFAC has licensed social workers who interact with clients to develop plans, explore education options, work on a budget plan, and increase other life skills.  Drug and alcohol treatment options and mental health services are provided when needed.  Over 6,000 requests are addressed by ADFAC’s Social Service program every year.

Affordable Housing Program The mission of ADFAC's Affordable Housing Program is to (1) repair, improve, or reconstruct substandard, owner- occupied homes, and (2) construct new affordable homes primarily for extremely low or very low income individuals/families.

 Clients must meet residency and income requirements which are set by the Federal Housing Finance Board and are based on the area’s median income.  In order to receive home repair or rehabilitation, clients must own their home and have lived there for at least one year.  Those receiving assistance from the Affordable Housing Program help to pay for costs through sweat equity and low-interest loans. Affordable Housing Program

Services offered include:  Summer Repair Fair  Home Renovations  New Homes  Home Reconstruction  Energy Services  Yard Enhancement  Repairs for the Elderly  Homeownership Education  Affordable Financing The Affordable Housing Program also matches government grants. Each year, over 400 families receive assistance from ADFAC’s Affordable Housing Program and approximately 70 repair jobs are completed. Affordable Housing Program
