Residential Floor Plans

Residential Building Plans A residential building plan is prepared by an architect and consists of a set of drawings that craft people use as a guide to build the house. Building plans go by many names. Prints Blueprints Drawings Construction drawings Working drawings

Floor Plans Drawings show building details from a “bird’s eye” view, directly above the house. A floor plan shows the length and width of the floor it is depicting. Builders use the dimensions drawn on the floor plans to determine the exact size and location of various parts of the building like doors, windows, and walls.

Elevation Drawings Shows the height and width of each wall separately. Includes heights and widths of windows and doors. Shows base molding, crown molding, or chair rail.

Detail Drawings

Specifications Provide extra details about materials to be used in the house. Includes material size, color, manufacturer, and item number. Also includes specific installation instructions and locations of each material.

Types of Drawing Lines

Scale Most residential plans are drawn to a scale of ¼” = 1’–0”. Each ¼” on the drawing equals 1 foot in real life.

Bedroom Remodel Project On the ¼” grid paper provided, draw your own bedroom. Be sure to locate the windows and doors. Note the width and length of the room, and the ceiling height. You may show your furniture on the plan, but it is not required.
